Casa Loma showed why it was the number one ranked team heading into Wednesday's championship game in the Whitehorse Summer Hockey League.

The team overcame two deficits and then never surrendered the lead in its contest against Cinderwood, which was played at the Canada Games Centre. The final score was 4-3.

"We had a hard fought battle and it came down to the two top teams," said Loma goaltender Cory McEachran. "In the end and I think we just out veteraned them. We have more than enough talent in the dressing room to go around and any second we want to turn it on we just push the button."

McEachran was one of the stars of the game and was tested early on by a determined, young Cinderwood team.

It wouldn't take to long for Cinderwood's persistence to pay off and the team got on the board after a highlight reel goal by Jaxson Glass at around the half way point of the period. Glass was able to get behind the Casa Loma defencemen and outweighed McEachran, before firing a bullet of a shot past his glove side to give Cinderwood a 1-0.

Casa Loma wasted little time flexing its own offensive capabilities. The team stormed back less than 30 seconds after falling behind to draw even.

Cury Dixon scored the goal after Cinderwood goalie Brad Gustafson made the initial save, but couldn't get to the rebound in time. The puck just trickled past the line to even up the contest.

A nice pass from Cinderwood defenceman Alex McDougall set up the team's second goal. Kane Dawe netted the puck on a perfectly placed shot that went through the legs of McEachran with just over seven minutes left in the period.

Cinderwood didn't let up and kept the pressure on Casa Loma's defence, which eventually led to a spectacular sliding pad save made by McEachran.

McEachran save seemed to spark some life in his Casa Loma teammates, who turned it on and forced Gustafson to freeze the puck with around four minutes remaining in the period. Casa Loma won the following face off and in a lightening quick play, Danny Johnson fired the puck past Gustafson to tie it up at 2-2.

A strange play happened early on in the second to give Casa Loma its first lead of the game; when a player on Cinderwood, who was carrying the puck had a mis-communication with Gustafson. The end result was the puck deflected into the net.

Casa Loma wasn't finished and added a little insurance at 9:03 when Clayton Thomas netted the team's fourth goal on a nice set up pass from Dixon.

In typical fashion, Team Cinderwood didn't give up and continued to battled hard in attempt to get back into the game. The team generated numerous scoring chances, but only to be thwarted by McEachran, who was like a brick wall for Casa Loma.

In the final two minutes of the game, Cinderwood managed to solve McEachran great play. The team's third goal was scored by David Stephens on a rebound after McEachran made the first save.

Cinderwood pulled it's goalie with less than one minute to go in the game, but was unable to put in the tying goal.

McEachran said he felt good the whole game.

"The puck was just hitting me today," he said.

Jay Glass, the head coach and sponsor for Cinderwood, said he was proud of the way his team played during the five-week season.

"It is always better to win the game in the end, but I think it was an accomplishment to get there," he said. "Everybody in the league I think got something out of it because we got to play a reasonable level of hockey for this time of year and most of these guys are going off to camps. We hope that this helped them."

In the battle for third place, Ketza beat EBA 10-5.
