THREE-PEAT CHAMPION – Lindsay Carson cruises through the tunnel on her way to victory at last month’s Yukon Cross-Country Running Championships. Over the Thanksgiving long weekend, she won the Victoria Marathon Weekend’s 8K event, her third in three years.
In her third year racing at the Victoria Marathon 8K, Lindsay Carson remains undefeated.
In her third year racing at the Victoria Marathon 8K, Lindsay Carson remains undefeated.
While her time was slowest this year – 27 minutes and 35 seconds, compared to 2015’s 27:32 or 2014’s 27:15 – Carson was still OK with her time.
She finished in the top 15 overall and the next women was more than 10 minutes back.
The 8K race began in the Sunday morning twilight, shortly after 7 a.m. on Belleville Street near the Inner Victoria Harbour. It was a relatively flat out and back course circling James Bay and finishing in front of the Legislature.
The women’s course record was set in 1991 by Ulla Marquette (26:24) and still stands.
Junior runner Naoise Dempsey was the second Yukoner across the line in the 8K, completing the course in 31:06 to finish second in his division.
Competing in the men’s 75-79 division, Melvin Rippell was second in 49:50.
In all, there were 29 athletes from Whitehorse who competed in the 8K.
In the half marathon, Jonathan Zaugg was the first Yukoner across the line in one hour 23 minutes and 51 seconds.
He was fourth in his division.
In the women’s under 19 category, Hannah Shier was first in 1:44:33 at her Victoria Marathon debut. Sharing the podium with her was fellow Yukoner Hanna Atmanspacher-Wirth who was third in 1:50:17.
Yukon race walkers John Storms and Bonnie Love also made the trip down to Victoria to compete in the half marathon. There is no category for race walkers at the marathon, since the race can’t sufficiently judge the route.
Storms had his best-ever time on the course, pulling off a 1:52:53. Love came in at 2:26:44.
This has been a breakout year for Storms, who travelled to seven judged race walking events this year.
“I thought, well if I’m going to do this, I might as well find out if I’m legal,” said Storms.
He began in Kamloops and has adjusted his technique thanks to pointers from fellow race walkers over the season.
The changes have led to his best-ever time in the half marathon 1:52:53. His goal last weekend was to finish in under two hours and he shaved more than 15 minutes off his previous time.
“There’s lots of crowds. There’s lots of people all the way along,” said Storms. “It’s very scenic ... it’s really nice.”
In the marathon, Simon Lapointe led the way for Yukoners, finishing the 42.2-kilometre course in 2:55:45. He was fourth in his division.
In all, there were 106 runners from Whitehorse that made the trip and three from Dawson City.
More than 6,000 runners competed in the Victoria Marathon weekend.
Storms said that chatter on the plane ride back to Whitehorse indicated a positive experience for Yukoners.
“I think everybody had a good time,” said Storms.
