Cardinals come from behind to tie Pirates
It wasn't a win, but for the players on the Cinderwood Cardinals it was the next best thing; a come-from-behind tie in the final inning.
It wasn't a win, but for the players on the Cinderwood Cardinals it was the next best thing; a come-from-behind tie in the final inning.
The Yukon Fastball League ended its regular season with two games Sunday evening at the Pepsi Softball Centre.
The first game was between the Roadhouse Pirates and the Cinderwood Cardinals.
Cinderwood drew first blood with one run in the bottom of the first inning when Kirk Gale smacked a double to right field for an RBI.
Roadhouse showed why it's one of the top teams in the league, coming back in the second.
The team benefitted by a double hit by right-fielder Nathan Thomson, which drove in two runs.
Thomson showed off his base running skills one batter later. After stealing third he then came home on a wild pitch.
After a scoreless third inning, both teams exchanged two runs a piece in the fourth, making the score 5-3 heading into the fifth and final inning.
Cinderwood pitcher Brian Powers was clutch in the top of the fifth inning, striking out two Roadhouse players with the bases loaded and only giving up one run.
Things looked dim for the Cardinals, which trailed by three with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
However, a walk, a single and a home run by Derek Hemsley changed the team's fortune.
Hemsley hit his second home-run of the season, a three run shot which tied the game 6-6.
Roadhouse pitcher Jeff Frizzell managed to strike out the next batter, Logan Freese, to end the game in a tie.
The second contest on Sunday was between the Casa Loma Jays and the Chilkoot Steel Oldtimers.
The Oldtimers didn't have enough to field a team, so they picked up four players from the previous game.
Despite Casa Loma pitcher Matt King, striking out six batters, Casa Loma wasn't able to generate much offense and ended up losing the game 7-3.
Chris Saunders pitched for the oldtimers.
The Yukon Fastball League playoffs begin this Sunday at the Pepsi Sofball Centre's diamond two.
The first game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
