The Canaccord Capitals needed some late game heroics in the gold medal final of this year's PeeWee Yukon Hockey Championship.
After falling behind 3-0, the team stormed back to beat Pizza Hut 8-6 this past Sunday in Teslin.
Alex Hanson scored Canaccord's first goal, after receiving a beautiful pass from Bohdi Elias that set him up in the slot.
Making no mistake, Hanson fired a wrist shot into the top corner of the net, beating the Pizza Hut's netminder on the glove-side.
"That pretty much got the team woken up because they definitely were in a slump before that, but Alex Hanson's goal showed that we definitely could come back," said Canaccord Capitals head coach Evan Grant. "I think that was definitely our turnaround point."
This year's Yukon Hockey Championships featured nine teams that played Friday through Sunday.
All of the tournament's semi-finals and finals were played on Sunday.
Besides Teslin, other Yukon community teams included Haines Junction and Dawson City.
The Capitals got off on a winning note, beating Pizza Hut 4-2 on Friday.
Canaccord broke a 2-2 tie, scoring twice in the final 20 minutes to win by a pair.
There wasn't as many goals scored on Saturday in the team's game against Powerade, however, the final score was just as close.
Two goals in the first and one more in the third secured a 3-1 win for the Capitals.
The Capitals continued its winning ways, beating Whitehorse Junior Mustangs 7-3 and then went on to a convincing 12-4 victory over the Kopper King.
Sunday's semi-final against Teslin drew a large crowd in support of their hometown squad.
"The whole village was almost there," said Grant. "There was lots of cheering."
Despite the enthusiasm of the crowd, Teslin ended up losing the game 10-1.
The victory qualified Canaccord for a rematch against Pizza Hut Sunday evening.
Grant said Pizza Hut's third goal was really demoralizing for his players.
"After the third goal, the emotion on the team was quite low," he said.
"Players were quite upset and it took some motivation on a few of the people on our team to bring the team around and get them riled up to get a goal and play a little stronger."
After Hanson cut into the deficit, both teams went on to trade a pair of goals in the second period.
The score heading into the second was 5-3.
The Capitals battled back in the third, scoring five more, including the game winner from captain Kole Comin, who scored the goal with two minutes left.
Grant said the team had hopes of winning this year's tournament.
"We are a fairly strong team in Whitehorse, but we have lost games to Powerade and Pizza Hut before, so by no means did we think this tournament was ours."
He said the boys took a lot of pride in winning.
"The boys were showing off their medals the whole ride home to every single car they could."
Comin, who plays centre, said it was awesome to comeback and win against Pizza Hut.
"That goal by Alex was really important to get us going," he said. "Our team really worked hard and deserved that win. It was so much fun."
Hanson, who admitted to being a little nervous, said the comeback made the gold medal win more special.
Comin was named as tournament MVP, while Tyson Hope was given the MVP for the gold medal game.
