Bryden claims two judo medals

A young judoka from Carcross earned two gold medals at the Northern Lights Judo Championships last weekend.

A young judoka from Carcross earned two gold medals at the Northern Lights Judo Championships last weekend.

Kenai Bryden claimed victory in two Under-8 Mixed Ground divisions Saturday at École Émilie-Tremblay in Whitehorse.

The youngster beat Lia Hinchey for gold in the -23 kilogram category, then bested Sapphira Oettli for gold in the -26 kg division.

Forty-four athletes hit the mat Saturday in ground and standing categories, including 26 novice entries.

Other gold medal winners Saturday included Mannix Bingham, Samara Jacob, Samual Bradet, Gabriel Racine, Luke Roberts, Brennen Little, Jonathan Racine, Dylan Anderson, Emersyne Sias, Kenny Hyatt and Darrien James-Tizya.

Meanwhile, Zephyr Bingham and Rowen Kingston were tops in the knowledge categories.

Four clubs were represented at the tournament – host Northern Lights, Shiroumakai, Golden Horn, each from Whitehorse, as well as Hiroshikai out of Carcross.
