The final weekend of the broomball season ended with a bang as Yukon Brewing defeated the Fireweed Shooters in double overtime 2-1 in Haines Junction on Sunday to win their second consecutive KPI Cup.

The broomball playoffs were cut short due to weather. According to Brewing forward Shayne Fairman, the team was supposed to play the Shooters before it got too warm to play.

Brewing was able to get on the board first off the stick of Fairman in the first period. The Shooters got the goal back in the first minute of the second when Scott King found the back of the net.

By the time the two teams made it to the championship game, they had played six games. Fairman said the Brewing side was battling some hamstring issues and that they just tried to stay hydrated on the bench.

After the goal by the Shooters, Fairman said, the game was back-and-forth.

"It was a great final and could have gone either way," said Fairman. "It was Darryl (Cann) versus Kyle (Nault) in goal."

When the buzzer sounded to end regulation, it was determined overtime would be played four-on-four, with no pulling goalies or shootouts in further rounds.

Each team had its chances to end the game in the first frame of OT but both goalies stood tall and turned away every shot they faced.

In overtime, Fairman said, there were opportunities on both ends and it made for a really interesting game.

"You want to be in these games," said Fairman. "It's a fun game."

With three minutes remaining in the second overtime, Kyle Bowers ended the contest and sealed the KPI Cup off a feed from Fairman.

"It was a huge relief to get that last goal," said Fairman.

Nault described the match "as a solid game, a marathon. Battle."

He said the final goal was a quick shot with a bit of a screen, low on the short side of the net.

After the game, Fairman said Brewing, a veteran group, won it as a team.

"It was a good team effort," said Fairman. "We control the ball, get great goaltending, and play tight defence."

The win was a nice way to cap off the weekend in Haines Junction.

"Broomball is a great sport and it was a hell of a weekend," said Fairman. "Every game (in the tournament) had something on the line. It was a hoot."
