Iain Breckenridge is the new captain of the Air North Rangers team and he took that responsibility with both hands, as he opened the scoring, then marshalled the defence to keep Klondike Business Solutions out to run out 4-3 winners in the opening match of the over 35’s soccer season.

The game was played at a fast pace and in good humour even though there were some big tackles put in from both sides. Myles Dolphin took the game to KBS, with two well placed goals using all his skill and guile, even though he did post a contender for miss of the season when he skewed wide from less than a yard. That was before Huy Nguyen got what turned out to be the winner five mins before the end of the game.

For KBS there was a lot to be pleased about. The work rate from Gord Barker, Mark Sebek and Jim Brown was out of the top draw, they were also rewarded for their endeavour with a goal each. Brown could of collected a share of the spoils but his shot hit the post and rebounded harmlessly away to the amazement of everyone watching.

Carre means business

Justin Carre, last year’s golden boot winner has no intensions of giving up his crown. He proved this with a faultless display and four goals as Yukon Brewing crushed Driving force 10-6 in their opening game.

Carre is feeling the pressure from the young guns who have joined the league, but he has maintained a strict health regime that has left him with not an ounce of extra weight on his slender frame, as he weighs the same now as a wet teddy bear. Carre was ably assisted by Miles Hume who helped himself to four goals and old warrior Eric Murphy who got two.

Driving Force never gave up, against the Brewing onslaught, with goals from Phil Jackson, Greg Grady, Craig Caldwell, Shawn Fearon two, and skipper Keith Maguire. They will play worse this season, but they came up against Dale Cheeseman’s Yukon Brewing team that was eager to put down a marker for the other teams.

Hats off to Zuccarini

Patrick Zuccarini’s debut in the Whitehorse Rapids league was a memorable occasion as he scored a hat trick to lead his Pepsi side to a 6-5 win over Yukon Info.com

Zuccarini, following his brother Michael into the league enjoyed himself with his goals as did the older members of the team, Guliano Rayo scored with his trademark toe poke.

Fabian Glyka, the Yukon soccer supremo got one as did the ever-handy Nathan Cross.

Yukon Info had a chance at the end to tie the game up, but an uncharacteristic miss from skipper Danny Macdonald allowed Pepsi to take all the points. Info’s goals came from Chris Stacey, Adil Khalik, Macdonald and there was two goals from Will Chetcuti who had a very pleasing introduction.
