The Boogaloo trail network was packed with families as the Contagious Mountain Bike Club hosted its first mountain bike race of the season Sunday.

Race organizer Sierra Van Der Meer was impressed by how many families were out on the trails together.

“I hadn’t seen so many families riding as a group before,” she said.

The Boogaloo Race had 53 participants tackling the seven to 24-kilometre courses.

A contingent of run bikers also hit the track on a fun course.

Many of the youth riders hit the longer courses as well, which had Van Der Meer “forever impressed” by the young riders.

“I think there’s a really bright future in mountain biking,” she said. “I think we’re going to see a lot of fast riders coming out of the Yukon in the next decade.”

Since the Boogaloo Race is the first official race of the season, Van Der Meer said it’s more about people getting out and seeing the trails even if they’re racing hard.

The club tries to highlight different trails during races throughout the season.

Van Der Meer was out on the trails with her GPS a few weeks out of the event to design appropriate routes.

In the men’s long event, Dave Gonda (1:19:43) came in first, trailed by Preston Blackie (1:25:47) in second and Bill Slater (1:29:53) in third.

The women’s long course saw Kristenn Magnusson (1:40:21) score the win, followed by Erin Light (2:02:42) and Monika Melnychuk (2:27:18).

On the medium course, Caleb Light (1:08:37) won the men’s side followed by Louis Mouchet (1:27:37) and Jude Slater (1:30:24), while Chrissy McConnell (1:11:07) won the women’s event with Jen McGillivary (1:14:52) in second and Jess Heath (1:16:03) in third.
