The Yukon’s next generation of mountain bikers kicked off the annual Boogaloos event, held by Boréale Mountain Biking and the Contagious Mountain Bike Club at the Magnusson parking lot on Grey Mountain.
Several young racers took part in the Run Bike World Cup Championships, consisting of a short trek into the woods and back.
For this race – the first of the annual local mountain bike season – finishing positions didn’t matter: all racers were treated to ice cream and popsicles.
Following the kids’ race, it was the adults’ turn to attempt multiple race distances along the Boogaloo trail system – including short, medium and long course options. More than 60 cyclists participated.
Winners included Massey Baker and Pippa Lawson (long course); Josh de la Salle and Vanessa Gee (medium); and Mathias Frostad and Kate Koepke (short).
“We had a great turnout,” said Marsha Cameron of Boréale Mountain Biking. “Lots of families, including kids age two and up. We’re trying to make bike events family friendly. This is a fun one. It’s silly and there’s always popsicles involved.”
The mountain bike season will soon be in full swing, with the next major event on the calendar being the 15th annual 24 Hours of Light relay June 27 and 28.
This year’s relay will be held at the biathlon range on Grey Mountain.
