Bogle posting consistent split times in marathon

Whitehorse runner Sue Bogle posted the quickest time among the four local runners who ran the ScotiaBank Calgary Marathon Sunday.

Bogle finished in a time of three hours, 47 minutes and 22 seconds, or good enough for 48th overall out of the 348 women who participated, and seventh among the 44 women competing in the 45 to 49 age category.

Laura Vanderkley finished two minutes behind Bogle in a time of 3:49:39, or 52nd overall in the field of woman and seventh among the 57 competing in the 40 to 44 age category.

Marathon runners generally maintain a consistent pace through the 42.2 kilometres. Split times showed Bogel running at a remarkably consistent pace. At the five-kilometre mark, she was clocking an average of five minutes and seven seconds per kilometre to start off the marathon. At the 10-kilometre mark, she was running a kilometre in five minutes and four seconds, returned to 5:07 per kilometre at both the 20- and 30-kilometre splits.

Similarly, Vanderkley’s pace was 5:21 per kilometre at the five-kilometre split, 5:11 at the 10, 5:17 at the 20 and 5:15 at the 30-kilometre split.

Whitehorse marathoner Tamaralyn Young finished the race in 4:42:43, putting her 26th out of 57 women in the 40 to 44 category.

Josh Schroeder of Whitehorse finished in 5:02:25.

Of the five Whitehorse residents and one Watson Laker entered in the half-marathon, Travis Adams of Whitehorse was the quickest in a time of 1:58:17, putting him right in the middle of the 209 men who ran in the 35 to 39 category.

Betty Stoke Burns posted a time of 2:00:37, placing her 46th among the 239 women entered in the 35 to 39 category.

As with the marathoners, the pace for the half-marathoners was also noticeably consistent.

At the five-kilometre split, Adams was running a kilometre in a average of 5:41, 5:30 at the 10-kilometre split and 5:39 at the 15.

Split times for Davis were 5:31, 5:36 and 5:43.

Whitehorse runners Rene Mills, Tara Larkin and Meggy Hanna all finished the half-marathon within a minute and a half of each other, with times of 2:06:46, 2:07:58 and 2:08:16, respectively. Kelly Allen of Watson Lake finished in 2:19:33.

The only local runner in the 10-kilometre race, Alison Adams finished in 1:11:39, putting her 69th among the 163 women racing in the 40 to 44 category.

And Damien Burns of Whitehorse completed the five-kilometre run in a time of 39:28, putting him 32nd among the 77 men entered in the 40 to 44 category.
