The Yukon Biathlon Range was busy Sunday as the sport's governing body held its annual open house event.

There wasn't quite enough snow on the ground to give individuals the option of skiing, which gave participants lots of practising shooting. However, some individuals ran a short lap as an alternative.

This year's open house attracted more than 40 people to the range over the course of its two hour duration.

"It went really well," said Vicki McCollum, president of Biathlon Yukon. "We had lots of people out trying it."

Sunday's open house was free to participate in and besides the participants, featured both coaches and members in junior and senior program, who volunteered their time to help out at the event.

The event attracted a lot of kids between the ages of nine and 12, which included more than a few new signups for Biathlon Yukon's bears program.

Caelan McLean, 10, attended the open house for the first time, signing up for the bears program before taking his first shot.

Despite shooting for the first time, McLean had a great showing, hitting four out of five targets in his first attempt. He made three out of five on his second attempt.

McLean, who has been a competitive cross country skier for the past four years, said he enjoyed participating and looks forward to the start of the biathlon season.

The different membership groups include bears, junior, senior and adult.

The prices range from $150 to $220. Registration can be done by calling McCollum at 667-3029.
