There was no shortage of excitement this past weekend for the annual Christmas Toonie Soccer Tournament.

Thanks to a great deal of parity in the indoor soccer league this season, the tournament featured a number of close games in all three age divisions.

One of the closest competitions came in the U-11 final, which PropertyGuys.com managed to win in a thrilling 11 person shootout over Coates Services. The final score was 3-2.

"We played together really well as a team," said PropertyGuys.com coach, Tom McBee. "There was lots of passing, lots of covering up for each other. Everyone wanted to play all the time, that was great."

This was a back and forth game, which featured a late Coates Service's goal by Alex Hansen in the final minute to send it into overtime.

After no goals were scored during the five overtime minutes, both teams suited up for the shootout.

Etienne Geoffrey Gagner scored on the first shot to give PropertyGuys.com the 1-0 advantage. However, it didn't take Coates long to respond and thanks to a nice shot by team goalie Brayden Klassen it was all evened up at 1-1.

Both goalies were rock solid for the remainder of the shootout, each making a number of big saves to keep their respected teams in the game.

After 11 shooters, Quinn Pierce would put an end to the game and gave PropertyGuys.com the gold medal victory. Pierce made a great shot that found the bottom right hand corner of the net.

"It's pretty cool," said PropertyGuys.com goaltender Ross McBee about the win.

Despite not winning the gold medal, Coates Services co-coach Jolene Jacobs said she was proud of the way her team played.

"We are so proud of each and every one of them," she said. "They played to their strengths and they played as a team and that is all we can ask."

"Both teams played extremely well and it was non-stop action," said Coates Services other co-coach Sarah Barr about the final. "There were no lulls."

Hansen scored both goals for Coates Services, while Geoffrey Gagner and Mackenzie Shaw scored for PropertyGuys.com

Dirkbuilt Contracting placed third in the U-11 division.

The U-9 division featured a hard fought gold medal battle between Fountain Tire and France Construction.

Fountain Tire benefitted once again from playing a strong team game, which helped them defeat France Construction 1- 0.

The team's lone goal scorer was Jonathon Amos, who netted the ball in the first half on a direct feed from Tyler Milton. Alex Jurak earned a shut out thanks to a textbook performance in net.

Fountain Tires tremendous defensive play also was able to hold off all of the aggressive offensive attacks made by France Construction.

The U-9 division's battle for third place saw Intersport come out on top over Purolator Courier.

The U-7 division final was another classic, which saw Mike's Tub & Showers beat Jacobs' Industries by a 3-1 score.

Joseph Coyne netted two goals for Mike's Tub & Showers and Joshua West scored once.

Ewan Halliday put in the lone goal for Jacobs' Industries.

The Soccer Shoppe won bronze over Pacific Northwest Moving by a 2-1 score.
