Dahria Beatty has gotten used to competing against older skiers.
The 17 year old ended the season with a strong showing in the U.S. SuperTour Finals in Sun Valley, Idaho, last weekend.
She finished 33rd overall in the mini-series, which included a 2.8-kilometre prologue, a 10-km classic, a sprint and a four-km hill climb on the last day.
"I was very happy with that,” said Beatty, who is a member of Cross Country Canada's junior national team.
She was joined by fellow Yukoner Emily Nishikawa, who finished the series in 16th place overall – the second Canadian.
Olympic gold medalist Chandra Crawford was the top Canadian with a sixth-place finish overall.
Still under 20 years old, Beatty competed among some of the top senior racers in the world, and turned a lot of heads with her placing where others her age would have been intimidated by the level of competition.
Beatty's best result came in the sprint, when she finished third for juniors and 18th overall.
"That was my best race of the week, and I was really happy with that. I had a strong day.”
The last event, the painful hill climb up the slopes of the downhill resort, was skied with a handicap start; the first woman across the line at the top was the overall winner of the series.
The women's field was dominated by Alaskan superstar Kikkan Randall, who has been in top form all season, with multiple wins on the World Cup circuit.
She posted the best time in all four races to handily clinch the overall title.
Beatty noted that the series included top skiers from Canada, the U.S. and Scandinavia.
"There was tons of really great competition there from across North America, and also some Swedes and Norweigans – so the competition was really good,” she said.
U.S. Ski Team member Kris Freeman won the men's side of the race. The top Canadian male was Canadian National Team member Drew Goldsack.
No Yukon men made the trip to Idaho.
Beatty and Nishikawa made the trip to Idaho following the nationals in Canmore, Alta., in mid-March.
After winning three medals in Canmore, Beatty said she still had some gas left in the tank.
"I felt like I recovered well during the week (after nationals) and I still had energy left, so I was happy with that, I felt like I had good races and I was able to recover in the week in between.”
Skiers now get a rest before heading into summer training in preparation for next season.
