Seven races into the FIS Cross-Country World Cup season, Dahria Beatty is finding her snow legs.

The 22-year-old Whitehorse native finished up racing at the third World Cup in Davos, Switzerland with her best result this season, 25th, in the sprint race.

“I like the course. I skied it well, not perfectly, but well enough” she said to Cross-Country Canada staff following the race. “That was really encouraging to know that a strong race that isn’t perfect is good enough to make the heats some days.”

After qualifying in 27th place, Beatty drew a fast heat, which included top qualifier, Jonna Sundling of Sweden and the eventually silver-medal-winning Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg of Norway.

The course, which was built using man-made and snow-farm snow was a little slippery by the heats. Beatty had a clean heat, finishing 5th, about four seconds back from a lucky loser position.

With her top 30 finish, Beatty earned the Canadian women’s first World Cup points of the season.

World Cup points are awarded to top 30 results and are used as selection criteria in determining teams for big events like the world championships and the 2018 Olympics.

Her result earned a tweet from Olympic Champion Chandra Crawford: “Great job hitting the points, @_dahria @cccski. Have a great season @FISCrossCountry!”

The top 30 World Cup finish is only the second in Beatty’s career. Last season in the post-Christmas world cups, she was 15th at the Ski Tour of Canada in Canmore, Alta.

Beatty also posted her best distance result of the season with a 42nd place in the 15-kilometre skate race Saturday in Davos.

In a blog reflecting on the first three world cups, Beatty wrote: “each race left me wanting more. Now nearing the end of this first period of racing, I am thinking of each race as a building block, part of the foundation I am going to need going forward this season and into the coming years.”

The World Cup travels to La Clusaz, France this weekend before wrapping up for the holiday season.

With Sophie Carrier-Laforte joining the women’s world cup team, they will be able to field a relay team for the 4x5km relay in France, the first time in many years they have been able to do so pre-Christmas.

“I think for all us women that’s an awesome distance,” said Beatty. “I know this will just fire us up even more.”
