The 29th running of the Don Sumanik Memorial Race Series took place over the past two weekends.

The free-style race took place on Nov. 27, and the classic race on Dec 4. Both races were held in unseasonably warm temperatures, much to the skiers' delight.

And with plenty of fresh snow underfoot.

The grooming, timing and organizational volunteers outdid themselves once again and put on a great race.

Thirty-two skiers came out for the free-style race and 82 for the classic race.

For the classic race held this last weekend, Trevor Bray (15) and Adrienne Hynes (15) posted the fastest juvenile category times on a 7.5-kilometre course, while Caelan McLean (13) and Natalie Hynes (12) in the midget categories aced the 3.75 km course to demonstrate that they are up-and-coming athletes.

The Don Sumanik trophies are awarded each year to the male and female skiers with the fastest overall time for the free-style and classic races.

This year, Elsie Sumanik presented the trophies to Dahria Beatty and Fabian Brook. These young athletes also each took home $50 cash prizes.

The chief of race, Erik Blake, would like to thank all the volunteers whose efforts made the races possible, and of course the skiers who took part.
