The Spectrum Security Bears are back to their winning ways to start the new broomball season.
The high-scoring club dominated the Bob Park opening tournament last weekend at Takhini Arena, capping it with a 5-0 final win Saturday over upstart Yukon Thunder.
Chris Nash scored twice, while Josh Hirsch, Ryan Martin and Lars Jessup added singles in what quickly became a blowout win.
“This was a full team effort,” said Bears captain Josh Hirsch. “Everybody was scoring. Our goaltending and defence was solid and our girls are strong.”
The Bears dominated, going 6-0 while scoring tournament highs in goals-for with 18, and goals-against with two.
Goalie Chris Sawyer also returned to the Bears roster, turning in six straight sparkling performances.
Meanwhile, the final marked the third straight game for the Thunder, who were simply out of gas.
The Bears beat them 2-0 earlier in the day, forcing the Thunder to play an extra game. Thunder downed last year’s tournament champions Nacho Nyak Dun DC 1-0 in the semifinal.
“That was the story of the tournament, actually,” Hirsch said of the Thunder.
“They played well. Their team captain Chad Bustin was MVP of the tournament, I would say.”
The Thunder’s Cinderella run included a five-shutout performance from Coady Bustin, a full team effort on defence and a few lucky bounces that turned into key goals.
“Our team gave it their all,” said Chad Bustin (Coady’s twin brother). “We had the shortest bench of any team in the tournament, but we were able to hold on. It will be a long time before I forget the feeling that I felt when I saw all the other teams cheering our team on in the stands after we scored the overtime goal to put us in the finals.
“For a sport that can seem rather silly at times, it sure does have its great moments – and that was most definitely one of them.”
The team scored just four goals en route to the championship game.
In total, eight teams took part in the season-opening tournament.
