Last night’s long distance orienteering championships were postponed – but not because of thunder, rain or hail.

The third chapter of the Yukon championship series was called off due to bear activity in the area, said event organizer Ross Burnett.

The race was slated to take place on the Long Lake trail system, immediately behind Whitehorse General Hospital.

But while setting up markers Tuesday night, Burnett came across two bears, and environment officers confirmed the area has had other sightings reported.

The tentative plan is to use the regularly scheduled orienteering meet on Aug. 12 for the long distance championships.

The Riverdale neighbourhood also experienced hail last night.
