Bantam Mustangs finish strong in Alberta
If anyone on the Bantam Mustangs was disappointed with their placing at its most recent tournament last weekend, they can take comfort in the fact that it wasn't a reflection of the team's great play.
If anyone on the Bantam Mustangs was disappointed with their placing at its most recent tournament last weekend, they can take comfort in the fact that it wasn't a reflection of the team's great play.
The Mustangs controlled the play in each of the team's three games in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, but some penalties and bad luck resulted in a 1-2 record.
"I just liked the way me met the physical challenge, and our level of competitiveness," said Bantam Mustangs co-coach Jay Glass. "I thought that we took steps in the right direction. You basically only gauge your performance by how you feel you play and we felt like we played really well."
The Mustangs got off to a quick start in its tournament opener against host Wetaskiwin, scoring in the first minute of play. However, unfortunately for the Mustangs the goal was disallowed because the officials didn't see it cross the line. The Yukon boys didn't let that set back get to them and put the puck in the net once again 11 minutes into the game.
The goal was scored shorthanded by Gage Preece, who was set up after two nice passes from Gibson Pearson and Matthew McCarthy.
Mustangs goaltender Patrick Soprovich preserved his team's 1-0 lead, making 10 saves before the conclusion of the first period.
Tyson Glass added to the Mustangs' lead in the second frame after faking a pass and then quickly sending the shot over the shoulder of Wetaskiwin's netminder.
Wetaskiwin went to work shortly after the second Mustangs goal, scoring four of its own to take a 4-2 lead into the third. Both teams were shutout in the third period with tied at 31 apiece. Pearson was named as Mustangs' MVP in the loss.
In game two the Mustangs faced off against a team from Sherwood Park. Once again the Yukoners got off on the right foot, scoring the first goal at around the half way point of the first period.
Scott Meredith netted the goal for the Mustangs, which was assisted by Tyson and Brett Roulston, who each made a nice pass on the play.
Not even a minute later the Mustangs made it 2-0 on a goal by Preece, who netted the goal on a rebound to a point shot fired by Mitch Read. Sherwood Park cut the Mustangs lead in half late in the first period, which favoured the Albertan team in shots by a 10 to nine margin.
Despite some excellent scoring opportunities for the Mustangs in the second period, Sherwood Park was able to net three more goals, taking a 4-2 lead into the final frame.
The Mustangs got right back into the game into the third, scoring its third goal of the game, which came courtesy of Roulston. The goal was set up by Brayden Kulych, who started the rush and created a rebound that Roulston was able to put in the back of the net.
However, this would be as close as the Mustangs would get and the final score would end at 4-3.
Kulych was named team MVP for the Mustangs for his outstanding play on defense.
The next contest for the Mustangs was the consolation contest against Morinville.
In similar fashion to its two previous games, the Mustangs got off to an early 1-0 lead. The goal was netted by Preece after fellow forward Mike Arnold stole the puck behind the net and made a centering pass.
Just two minutes later, Whitehorse added to its lead when Tyson banged in a rebound after a rush by Roulston. Isaac Moses also assisted on the play.
With only a few minutes remaining in the opening period, Morinville was able to answer back with a power play goal.
However, unlike in its previous two contests, the Mustangs weren't about to give up its lead and with both teams battling it out in the second frame, restored its two goal advantage. The goal was put in by Roulston on a nice pass set up by Tyson.
Roulston added one more goal before the conclusion of the second period to give the team a 4-1 lead.
The final Mustang goal was put in by Pearson in the third period to seal the 5-1 victory for the Mustangs. With 29 saves, Soprovich was named team MVP.
