The Arctic Winter Games International Committee announced Friday that the hosting rotation for 2024-2032 has been approved.

Alaska will be hosting the 2024 Games. The 2022 Arctic Winter Games, the first Games held after the cancellation of the 2020 Games in Whitehorse, will be in Wood Buffalo, Alta.

Pending receipt and approval of the Final Bid Package from the Yamal-Nenets Department for International and External Economic Relations, Yamal-Nenets is scheduled to host the 2026 Arctic Winter Games.

It will be the third time the Games will have been held outside of Canada or the United States. Nuuk, Greenland has hosted the Games twice, in 2002 and 2016.

Yamal-Nenets, located in Russia, will be hosting the Games for the first time.

“We are extremely pleased to be heading back to Alaska for the 2024 Games and also enthusiastic about the prospect of adding Yamal-Nenets to the hosting rotation thereby providing new and exciting sport and cultural opportunities for the Arctic Winter Games participants,” John Rodda, the vice-president of the AWGIC, said in a press release.

The International Committee has also committed to identifying new potential host sites within its permanent member jurisdictions as well as establish a list of hosting standards that are considered flexible to accommodate limitations in small host communities.

The Arctic Winter Games is the largest and most significant multi-sport cultural event in the circumpolar north. The success of the Games is directly related to a program that combines athletic competition, cultural exchange, and social interaction in the host community and amongst the participating contingents.

The 2020 Whitehorse Arctic Winter Games were shuttered on March 7, a week before they were to begin because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the Games' 50th anniversary, and the first time they had to be cancelled.
