Like other sports organizations, the Arctic Winter Games figure skating team put on a showcase of their routines last Saturday at the Canada Games Centre.

Bronwyn Hayes, Anika Kramer, Madisyn Millar, Alissa Russell, Natilee Thompson and Kiona Vallier were set to represent the territory at the Arctic Winter Games.

On Saturday, all the skaters performed their routines which they would have executed had the Games been held.

As well, while wearing their red-camo athletes’ jacket, the six skaters performed a thank you routine for parents, officials and volunteers who dedicated their time to the skaters and Games.

They performed to the Arctic Winter Games theme song – Bring It North a song written and produced by Yukon musician Daniel Ashley.

At the parade held on Sunday, some of the skaters spoke about what it meant to them to be able to perform.

“I enjoyed looking up into the stands and seeing everyone that came to watch us,” said Russell.

“It was nice to be able to use it at least one,” said Vallier. “It didn’t go to waste.”

“It was nice to see all the supporters around us and to know that our practice went toward something,” said Hayes.

Kramer agreed with the sentiments of her three teammates.

The skaters understood why the Arctic Winter Games had to be cancelled and appreciate all the training they received leading up to them.

They won’t have other competitions this season but they will be more prepared when they compete again in the future.

Being a part of the parade on Sunday, the day which would have marked the start of the Games, was a nice way to celebrate the athletes.

“It’s just nice to see all the athletes come together and celebrate what could have been,” said Vallier.

The figure skating competition would have featured athletes from the eight other contingents; Alaska, Northern Alberta, Greenland, Northwest Territories, Nunavik, Sampi and Yamal.

After all the routines were performed on Saturday, the skaters were gifted with flowers. As well, the coaches and volunteers were also recognized with gifts and flowers for their efforts.
