Atoms mixed hockey team improving: coach

Last weekend George King saw his Atoms mixed team battle harder than they had in the season yet.

The seven girls and five boys that make up the Coldwell Banker team played against Cinderwood. They lost the game 6 to 3, but the team showed significant improvement from previous games.

The game was high scored and filled with action, said King, who coaches the team.

King says he owes the success of the game to goalie Matthew Blindheim, who faced 56 shots on goal from Cinderwood. He managed to stop 50 of those shots.

Blindheim is one of the five boys who were skimmed off the top of the Whitehorse Minor Hockey league to backup the seven girls on King's atom team.

Coldwell kept the game scoreless until about seven minutes into the second period, thanks to Blindheim, King says.

Cinderwood's goalie Decker Fordham faced 27 shots on goal during the game, an improvement from Coldwell Banker's previous game.

King also saw an improvement along the boards, as the girls got into the game more and challenged the boys. There was more action at centre ice during face off as well.

The Coldwell Banker atom team will play again Saturday at 9 a.m. at Takhini Arena.
