The Whitehorse Atom Junior Mustangs faced Alberta's seventh ranked team at the Alberta Tournament of Champions this past weekend, and came home with a second place finish.

Coach Wade Comin said the team worked together and never quit to bring home second place.

The Mustangs were playing in the Tier 2 division, which Comin said is equivalent to AAA.

Their first game was against the Olds Ice Warriors.

The Mustangs rallied to a 9-5 win over the Warriors, on the strength of two goals each from Joe Stokes, Jessie McCuaig and Kane Comin.

The Mustangs then took on the Camrose Atom A Rangers, in search of a playoff spot in the tournament.

The Mustangs got their wish, after they downed the Rangers in a 4-0 shutout victory from goalminder Campbell Burdenie.

"He shut the door on the Camrose team,” said Comin.

The coach said it was the best he had ever seen his goalie play.

"He just played unreal,” he said.

With that game, the Mustangs earned their berth in the A final, where they were matched up with the Spring Bank Outlaws of Calgary, who are ranked seventh overall in Alberta for their division.

"They're one of the best teams in Alberta,” Comin said.

That didn't faze the Mustangs, as they came out full of energy against the Outlaws.

The game went for the Outlaws in the first, with the Mustangs trailing.

"We were always coming from behind, but we never gave up,” Comin said.

The Mustangs managed to tie things up 4-4 with a goal from Riley Smoler.

"A blistering slapshot from Riley Smoler tied it up in the third,” Comin said.

Another outstanding player for the Mustangs, Comin said, was goalie Tynan Hope who did his best against the tough team.

"He stood on his head, he was unreal,” Comin said.

With a minute left in the third, Comin made the decision to pull Hope from goal for a little more strength up front.

The Outlaws scored an empty-netter for the win, and the final score was 6-4.

Despite the loss, Comin is more than happy with his team's performance.

"It was really impressive for a Whitehorse team,” Comin said. "There was a lot of passing, a lot of hand work. They never gave up.”

The Atom Junior Mustangs now have the Whitehorse play-downs coming up next weekend.

"Our team, we'll be ready for that one,” Comin promises.

Before heading to the tournament in Alberta, Comin and his fellow coaches promised the team that they would shave their heads if they won.

"The coaches came home with a full head of hair, but we'll see what happens at the Whitehorse play-downs,” he said.
