The Jr. Mustangs were also busy this past weekend, competing in the Yukon Amateur Hockey Association PeeWee championships.

The Mustangs were able to capture the title, defeating three teams en route to first place.

The Mustangs were placed in pool B, where they faced the Envirolube and Haines Junction teams.

The Mustangs were able to get wins in each of the match-ups, winning the first game 3-1 and the second, 17-2.

The victories placed them first in their pool, which matched them up with the Office Supply Centre team, an opponent the Mustangs had failed to defeat all season long.

"Our kids were psyched up to play those guys,” said Kirk Gale, head coach of the Mustangs.

"We really wanted to show that we we're improving this year so we wanted to make sure we played smart and played hard.”

It was a capricious battle between the two teams as they exchanged leads throughout the first two periods.

All season long, the Mustangs have been able to hold their ground against the team but haven't been able to find the key to victory.

On Sunday afternoon, things finally fell into place.

After being tied at four goals apiece, the Mustangs were able to score two straight in the final period and put the game away with a final score of 6-4.

Once the Mustangs gained the lead, they knew they could maintain it thanks to improved goaltending and defence, said Gale.

The Mustangs had a balanced attack, with each of the lines getting onto the score sheet and playing smart and cohesive hockey.

"All the lines contributed,” said Gale.

"Each line had a goal and our defence and goal play was really good.”

Gale said the victory was a long time coming for the Mustangs.

"It was a big accomplishment for us, we've been battling that team all season.

"It was nice to see the kids come back and get the win, they were really, really happy.”
