Athletics Yukon is getting in on the celebrations for Canada's 142nd birthday.

The group plans to hold its annual Canada Day One Mile Run/Walk on July 1, starting at 2:15 p.m. by the Millennium Trail's Riverwall.

Registration is free and can be done in the parking lot, near the eagles nest and south of the Riverwall.

This is a timed race and because of the short distance can be completed either recreationally or competitively. The course finishes just before the duck race and is open to people of all ages.

Athletics Yukon chose to hold the event at this specific time so it didn't interfere with any other of the activities planned for Canada Day.

"I just think it's a good family event because kids can run a mile," said Sue Bogle, an Athletics Yukon director. "It's kind of neat to see how fast you can run it and a lot of people are down already for the parade and activities."

Other Athletics Yukon events include the Grey Mountain Summer Solstice Fun Run/Walk, which is being held tonight.

Those interested can meet at the upper parking lot on Grey Mountain Road. The start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the run itself goes up to the towers, before coming back.

It's approximately 12-km, however there is also a five-km distance as well.

On Thursday, the weekly Sportslife Trail Run will be held. This week's location is at Granger park at the end of Hamilton Blvd., past the Bigway grocery store. It's approximately 6.5-km.

On July 7, the Yukon Five-km Championships are being held at F.H. Collins Secondary School The start time is 6:30-km for both the 2.5-km and five-km run or walk.

The course uses a portion of the Millennium Trail before looping back to F.H. Collins.
