Organizers are hoping a change of day will attract a few more faces to this year's Athletics Yukon 10-km Road Race Championships.

The race, normally held on Saturday, was switched to tonight and will run along with the weekly Intersport five-km run or walk.

"I think there has been a fairly good turnout for the five-km runs and it's coming up now to the Skagway relay, so it would be great if we got 30 to 40 kind of thing," said head organizer for the road race

championships, Margaret Mundell.

If 30 people show up tonight it would be around double the turnout of 2008's race.

Registration starts at 6 p.m. at F.H. Collins Secondary School, while the race itself begins at 6:30 p.m.

The course is a variation of the one used in the Intersport weekly race, however, people have the option to do either five km or 10-km distances. Walkers are also welcome.

The run begins by F.H. Collins school, before making its way onto the Millennium Trail.

The only difference between the five-km and 10-km distances comes when runners get to Millennium Bridge (where the lone water station will be located).

The 10-km distances eventually links up with five-km course and includes two stops at the water station.

Cost to participate is $2 for Athletics Yukon members and $4 for non members.

The top three finishers in each category will be given a medal, but there will also be draw prizes, including vouchers from Java Connection and gift certificates from Baked Cafe.

Other upcoming Athletics Yukon events include the Chocolate Claim Pre-Skagway 10 Miler, scheduled for Aug. 30. That race will begin at 10 a.m. with registration taking starting at 9:30 a.m. at Rotary Peace Park.

Cost to participate is $5 for members of Athletics Yukon, while for non members it will be $10.
