Arctic Winter Games snowboarding trials at Mt. Sima tomorrow

Snowboard Yukon will be holding trials for the riders they will send to the Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie, Alta., Saturday and Sunday at Mt. Sima.

Snowboard Yukon will be holding trials for the riders they will send to the Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie, Alta., Saturday and Sunday at Mt. Sima.

To be considered, athletes must participate in both trial days.

The athletes selected from this weekend will go on to the final round of trials on Jan. 23 and 24, where two male and two female athletes from two different age categories will be chosen. Juniors are riders born 1991 or earlier, and juveniles must be born 1993 or earlier to be considered.

On Saturday, riders will participate in the giant slalom event. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and course inspection will start at 10:30. The competition will kick off at 11 a.m.

On Sunday will be the slope-style portion of the trials.

The terrain park will open at 10 a.m. for training with the competition following at 11 a.m.

At 12 p.m. the rail course will open for training runs, followed by the competition at 2 p.m.

Riders will be scored based on the best of two runs of each course.

Helmets for the event will be mandatory, and participants will have to sign a waiver at Mt. Sima, as well as be a member of Snowboard Yukon.

The cost will be $10 for the trials. All riders must be a Snowboard Yukon Competitive member. The cost is $25 to sign up. Participants are asked to show up early for registration.
