Alissa Russell glided, jumped and spun her way to a solo ice skating dance gold medal last weekend.

The 12-year-old Arctic Edge figure skater competed in two categories at the Super Series Autumn Leaves figure skating competition in Kamloops, B.C. It was her third year attending the competition.

She also skated in the pre-juvenile women category, where she earned Yukon’s top result, fourth.

Also competing at the event were Jamie Nickel, Bronwyn Hays and Mikayla Kramer.

Nickel and Hays were skating in a new category this year, juvenile women.

Hays, who loves sparkles so much she’s still picking them off of her team jacket, said her routine started slow and then picked up speed.

“I normally don’t land a lot of my jumps in competitions,” said Hays. “But this time I landed my double sow.”

In her pre-juvenile routine, Russell skated to a waltz, using her edges artistically.

“This one is slower so you can have your edges for longer,” said Russell. “It’s more waltzy and so I like that.”

Nickel meanwhile, had a music mishap when both her original CD and the backup that had her music on it malfunctioned. She smiled easily as she talked about the pre-competition complication in a dressing room at the Canada Games Centre this week.

Luckily her coach had an extra copy and Nickel was able to perform her routine, in which she landed her first combo.

The pre-juvenile skaters only performed one routine in competition, which was about two-and-a-half minutes long.

Nickel placed seventh in the U13 Pre-Juvenile Women Group One, while Hays was sixth in Group Two of the same category.

The trio, who all skate at locally with the Arctic Edge Figure Skating Club, are continuing to hone their routines in practice ahead of their next competition.

On the docket: skating fast and aiming to get a handle on more difficult jumps.

They would also like to work on getting bonus marks in their competition routines, called GOE, or grade of execution, which help boost their score when they, for example, spin tightly with speed and without migrating.

Kramer, who lives outside of Whitehorse now to train, competed in women’s novice and placed eighth.

The next competition for the skaters will be a local event, the Gold Nugget, Dec. 9-11.
