Yukon archers took the podium earlier this month at the national championships held in Truro, N.S.
“I do believe this is the best the Yukon has ever finished at the nationals,” team coach Warren Kapaniuk said in an interview Wednesday. “I know it is the first time we have podiumed.”
The three archers from the Yukon competed in the target event.
Alan Hanson finished second in the 50-plus age category for archers using recurve bows.
Wyatt Kapaniuk finished third in the cub recurve, 13-14 age category.
“I was pretty happy with that,” said Warren, his dad.
Vincent Menard, the only other Yukon archer at the nationals, finished seventh in the cadet compound class for 15-, 16- and 17-year-olds.
The coach explained the national championship event features some of the best archers in the country, minus members of the national team.
Funding support for Wyatt was provided through the Sport Yukon Athlete Development Program, Kapaniuk pointed out.
He also noted private sponsorship from Underhill Geomatics of Whitehorse assisted Menard with expenses.
“I love it when businesses support local athletes,” said the coach.
