Anchorage's Verrier wins annual Buckwheat Classic

Hundreds of cross-country skiers took part in the 2005 Buckwheat Classic this past weekend, which was held at Log Cabin.

Hundreds of cross-country skiers took part in the 2005 Buckwheat Classic this past weekend, which was held at Log Cabin.

Athletes from Alaska, B.C. and the Yukon made the trip, as well as a couple from Alberta, Ontario and the N.W.T. It was Anchorage native Adam Verrier who walked away with first place in the 50-km men's event, just over three minutes ahead of Yukoner Graham Nishikawa, who is a member of the Canadian ski team.

In the women's 50-km race, it was Madeleine Williams of Canmore, Alta. taking top prize, nearly 20 minutes ahead of Whitehorse's Sara Nielsen. Yukon Ski Team members finished first in the 25-km men's and women's events, with Ray Sabo completing the course more than seven minutes faster than Jorge Acheves in the men's race and Emily Nishikawa beating out Robyn Findlater by just 22 seconds in the women's race.
