DAWSON CITY – Jack Amos continued his winning ways in this year’s edition of the Air North Midnight Dome Race, beating all the other 26 runners in a time of 39 minutes and 25 seconds.

The only person to arrive at the top of the Midnight Dome any sooner was Dirk Millar, a walker who took the course in 1:08:15, but since the walkers started up the hill at 9:30 and it was close to 10:10 before the runners took off from beside the Palace Grand Theatre, that doesn’t change the results.

Because the route for the run was altered this year, becoming longer, Amos has established the new course record.

Race organizer for Run Dawson, Jody Beaumont, explained the changes.

The contestants used to turn left where the graveyards begin on Mary McLeod Road, and cut around the back of them to join the Dome Road farther up.

“We changed the route because over the past couple of years there has been quite a bit of residential development in the area. It is important to us that we do not infringe on private property and/or in close proximity to private homes (whether we have the right of way or not).

“We would like to remain respectful to the people in the neighbourhood and so decided that it was time to make a change.

“The only change in the new route involves running the full length of Mary McLeod Road versus running in back of the cemeteries. It adds 1 km to the route so it is now 8.2 km vs 7.2.

“The elevation gain is the same: 1,852 feet (564 m). The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and as a result we also have a brand new set of course records for the run and the walk (male and female).

The day was cool, about 14 C downtown when the two groups began, and it stayed that way as they increased in altitude while ascending, picking up water and refreshments at several stops along the way.

Miller was first up the chute to the top at 10:38, with Amos just a minute later.

The tables at the top were loaded with refreshments and the view, while slightly obscured by the slightly smoky haze, was spectacular.

Millar along with Roger Hanberg and one or two others, is one of the original Run Dawson members. Roger distinguished himself by arriving in Dawson by bicycle from Tuktoyaktuk in order to participate in this race.

One other participant, Ryan Benson, was notable for bringing his baby child in a backpack-like baby carrier all the way up the hill, arriving at 10:47.

Here are the results, up as far as five places, unless there were fewer people in that category.
