All-female ball division

There’s a new division in town.

By Vince Fedoroff on May 25, 2021

There’s a new division in town.

I was delighted to discover an all-female U10 U12 combined division in the minor ball league last week.

I was looking for photos of Whitehorse Minor Ball for the sports section and discovered this new division.

Teams in the division took to the field in their first game last Thursday after practices.

The idea started a number of years ago, with Sarah Walz, a competitive fast-pitch player and Amy Lank, and finally took off this year with the fielding of four teams.

Walz is hoping to bring fast-pitch back and is pushing for more all-female sports.

The play started with the girls hitting off a tee-ball stand for the first two innings and then bringing in pitchers.

While not all the rules were followed precisely, the girls had loads of fun.

Who knew such joy could be had from watching the first all-female division? Spectators were having as much fun as the girls were. Perhaps they should sell tickets!

Tonight Yukon co-ed ball starts and the Whitehorse Recreational Co-ed Soccer League started Monday evening.

Note:

With the Star currently recruiting for a sports editor, I have picked up the ball. While I am not a writer, I hope to present a page of sports on publishing days.

Please continue to send in results to the events at sports@whitehorsestar.com and we will do what we can to publish your sports.
