Air North opens new rec hockey season with win

Scoring came from all corners for Air North as they flew past the Kluane Drillers 7-6 in their opening game of the Whitehorse Recreational Hockey League season Sunday.

Scoring came from all corners for Air North as they flew past the Kluane Drillers 7-6 in their opening game of the Whitehorse Recreational Hockey League season Sunday.

Darius Elias and Shawn Kinsella each potted a pair of goals and an assist for the airline while Gerry Grant added a goal and two assists. Jeff Foster claimed a goal and one helper while Sam Oettli also found the back of the net and Ryan Kinney finished with three assists.

Doug Roberts replied for Kluane with two goals and an assist. Rob Pitzel and Dwayne Shewfelt each tacked on a goal and two helpers while Tyler Murray and Mike Gau each picked up a goal and one assist.

Pilligers 5

Boston Pizza 1

Darren Van Langen notched a pair of goals for the Pilligers as they burned Boston Pizza.

Jordan Johnston added a goal and two assists for the Pilligers while Larry Daigneault and Ryan McKenzie each had a goal and one helper. Ryan Hodgins was credited with two assists.

Trevor Twardochleb scored the lone goal for BP.

A&A 7

Alkan Air 1

AJ Beacon led the way for A&A, recording two goals and three assists as his team downed Alcan Air.

Sean Eyding added two goals and a pair of assists while Blayne Monahan also hit the twine twice. Khal Alwarid collected the other goal for A&A.

Peter Mostyn netted the lone goal for Alkan, unassisted.

Environmental Dynamics 3

Sports North 3

Andy Connors, Justin Halowaty and Bradley Barker provided the offence for Environmental Dynamics as they settled for a draw with Sports North.

Linus Fraser replied for Sports North with two goals and an assist while Dennis Connelly also scored.

Yukon Appliance Blues 8

Southern Tutchone Storm 3

Jeff Monkman had a big game for the Yukon Appliance Blues, picking up two goals and two assists as his team overpowered the Southern Tutchone Storm.

Daryn Leas, who leads the league in scoring, tacked on a goal and four assists for the Blues while Kenny Anderson, Cary Goodman and Jakub Jirousek each finished with a goal and two helpers. Eric Hendricks had a goal and an assist while Mike Cozens also found the back of the net.

Scott Horsey potted a pair of goals for the Storm while Matt Horsey added a goal. Tim McIntosh was credited with two assists.

Pilligers 14

A&A 6

Ryan Hodgins led the offensive explosion for the Pillgers, recording four goals and two assists as they destroyed A&A.

Ryan McKenzie added three goals and two assists while Jordan Johnston and Larry Daigneault each had a pair of goals and two helpers. Jamie Barker contributed a goal and three assists while Danny Crawford claimed a goal and two assists and Ben Cole also lit the lamp.

Blayne Monahan had a hat trick for A&A while David Sembsmoen, Sean Eyding and Shane Parker also hit the twine. Monahan and Sembsmoen each collected an assist.

Friday's Results

Sportsnorth 12

Alcan Air 4

Rob Hill was on fire for Sportsnorth, scoring four goals as they crushed Alcan Air.

Derrick Hynes, Linus Fraser and Terry Slonski added two goals apiece for Sportsnorth while Terry Jackson and Mike O'Connor also scored.

Joe Vigneau notched a pair of markers for Alcan while Dean Faragher and Joel Witten also posted goals.

Kluane Drillers 12

Southern Tutchone Storm 11

Ed Vanderkley fired four goals for the Kluane Drillers as they snuck past the Southern Tutchone Storm in a barnburner.

Dwayne Shewfelt added a hat trick for the Drillers while Rob Pitzel and Mark Daniels netted two goals apiece. Mike Gau also scored for Kluane.

Matt Horsey replied for the Storm with five goals of his own. Scott Horsey and Cody Joe each added a pair of goals while Scott Hume and Tim MacIntosh rounded out the scoring.

Southern Tutchone tied the game at 11, with 55 seconds left in the second period, but Subaru scored with just 44 seconds remaining in the game to take the victory.

Boston Pizza 8

Cinderwood 4

Lance Brown recorded four goals for Boston Pizza as they stuffed Cinderwood.

Derek Johnstone and Barry Blisner each tacked on a goal and assisted on all four of Brown's goals for BP. Mike Nikon and Trevor Twardochleb also scored, with Nikon adding an assist.

Martin Lawrie notched a pair of goals for Cinderwood while Jay Glass and Ben Wondga also scored. Lawrie, Glass, Randy Merkel, Curt Campbell, Mark King, Ian Kuster and Joey Mason were credited with assists.

A&A 6

Narrow Gauge Contracting 3

AJ Beacon picked up three points for A&A as they doubled Narrow Gauge Contracting.

Beacon scored two and added an assist while Sean Eyding also potted a pair of markers. Colin Nash collected a goal and two assists while Blayne Monahan posted a goal and David Sembsmoen finished with an assist.

Allan Koel scored twice for Narrow Gauge while Adrian Bergman also lit the lamp. Yves Paradis had one helper.
