Nasty weather may have delayed them for a couple weeks, but some 250 people took to the 8.75-kilometre route around the perimeter of the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport for the Air North Family Fun Run Saturday morning.
The run was originally slated for May 14, when organizers were forced to postpone until June 4 due to heavy, blowing snow.
"I don't think the weather deters too many people when you head into the summer in the Yukon,” said Josh Clark, marketing and sales coordinator for Air North.
"The track conditions were night and day compared to what they were back on May 14. It was fairly dry – prime track conditions – and good running weather, actually.
A lot of runners like the cooler weather.”
The $5 entry fee paid for the Athletics Yukon insurance fee and fund-raising for the Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon (LDAY).
Air North matched those funds dollar for dollar to end up with a $2,000 donation for LDAY.
The LDAY tent set up on site featured children's books and material about the organization.
Meghan Colgan, acting executive director for LDAY, noted there was also a game of hopscotch, a great game for numeracy and literacy.
LDAY volunteers also helped with traffic marshalling and other "odd jobs,” she added.
"I was really excited to see the number of people who knew of LDAY's involvment with the Air North run. I think Air North did a really great job of spreading that news for us.”
That promotion also saw LDAY camps fill up, the first of which starts June 20, though the group is still looking for youth between 14-18 years old with learning disabilities for the Youth Leadership Adventure Camp, a 19-day expedition in the Yukon wilderness from July 14-August 1.
This was the first year LDAY had a tent at the Air North fun run, which added to the event, Clark said, despite the early weather woes.
"I'd like to congratulate all the runners and walkers, and we look forward to seeing everyone out next year – hopefully May 14.”
