It didn't take long for Air Cargo Express to build up a lead in its game against the Flipper's Rejects Tuesday in the Whitehorse Co-ed Slo-Pitch League.

In the team's first playoff game of the '08 season, Air Cargo Express posted 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning and went on to win the game by a score of 18-8.

The C divisional playoff matchup was played at Whitehorse's Pepsi Softball Centre.

"It feels really good, sometimes we come together really well," said Sarah House, the first baseman on Air Cargo Express.

"It's nice to have a really good game. The good thing about C division is all the teams get along. There is a lot of camaraderie out here, so it is good to win, but it's not overly competitive."

The Rejects got off to a great start, wasting no time at all in building up a lead in the top half of the first inning.

With two runners on and only one out, a player on Flippers sent a hard shot to left field that fell for an inside the park home run. The pitcher for Air Cargo Express wouldn't be fazed at all by the 3-0 deficit and helped record two straight outs, including a strikeout, to get out of the inning.

Some clutch hits and smart base running from Air Cargo Express got the team right back into the contest in the bottom of the first. The team posted four runs in total, before Rejects pitcher Norm Blanchard recorded the final out on ground ball, which he made no mistake in underhanding to first base to end the inning.

Air Cargo Express showcased their defensive skills in the top of the second inning, recording three straight outs to get out of the inning unscathed.

The bottom of the second would be Air Cargo Express' finest moment of the game.

Team highlights included numerous hits, a home run and even a grand slam, which ended as a result of the league's 10 run mercy rule.

Despite the large deficit, the Rejects weren't about to give up and in a gutsy fashion attempted to bring themselves back into the game.

A nice shot that just got past the glove of the shortstop got things in motion for the Rejects in the top of the third. With runners on the corners and one out, the team went to work, hitting a shot to centre field that dropped for a double.

Once again Air Cargo Express' pitcher proved she was more than capable of dealing with the pressure, striking out the following batter, for the second out. In a pitcher against pitcher battle, Blanchard helped out his own cause singling down the third base line to clear the bases. However, another strikeout would end the inning before anymore damage was done. The score was 14-6.

Air Cargo Express shut down the Rejects for the remaining two innings of the game and added four more runs to the team's total. The game ended after the conclusion of the top of the fifth inning.

The core of the Air Cargo Express squad has been together for four years.

Traditionally, the team has done very well in league competition and is always at the top of the standings in the C division.

This season was no exception, which saw the team post a very impressive 13-3-2 record. Their 28 point total was enough to earn them second place in the C Division.

"We have actually had a pretty good season," said House. "We have come together pretty well as a team. Outside of the field we are all friends, which works well together. I think the fact that we can all get along and we are all pretty excited about playing, so it works well."

She said the second inning was the turning point of the game.

"That was a good inning," House said. "It really boosted our team."

House said the teams goal is to win every game they compete in for the rest of the playoffs.

"Our goal is always to win," she said. "We want to win, but over that we just want to have fun. We want to go out there and have a good time."

The Flippers Rejects didn't have quite as successful of a season as Air Cargo Express, but still managed to record four wins and two ties. The group finished in 10th place with 10 points.

Blanchard, who has been a pitcher for 28 years, said the score in Tuesday's contest wasn't a reflection of the game.

"It wasn't exactly a blowout, the score didn't indicate the game in that respect," he said. "It's pretty hard to get 10 runs back in one inning."

Blanchard said he is confident about the Rejects being able to bounce back from the loss.

"We get some of our key players back, which should make a difference."
