At the start of the Yukon Historical & Museums Association (YHMA) annual charity croquet tournament, about half the room had yet to swing a mallet.
On the lawns of the SS Klondike Historic Site on Saturday, just over 22 people played the fun game, popular in the mid-1800s.
Period dress was encouraged and some women wore white dresses and creative hats, while some men donned top hats.
They met around noon in a tent to learn the basics of the game and for introductions.
“You guys are all here to help us raise money to give LePage Park a little TLC and take care of those wonderful Heritage Buildings over there,” said Nancy Oakley, executive director of YHMA.
LePage Park is home to the annual summer Arts in the Park program. The tournament helps to support the upkeep of the Donnenworth House, Captain Martin House and Smith House.
“Our annual tournament is always a fun time for a great cause,” said YHMA president, Sally Robinson, in a press release. “Croquet is one of those sociable but competitive games anyone can play. Some great grudge matches have started over the last couple years and we are looking forward to seeing new and returning teams battle it out on the court.”
In croquet you play in pairs and you and your partner try to get to four points before the team you face. You win points by hitting the ball through the wickets.
The day was capped off with Après Croquet, featuring live music, a beer garden and a live auction.
