500 athletes compete in soccer championships

The players now get to head outside to pitches all over the city for the summer.
But not before each age group got to battle it out one more time indoors for the Northwestel Indoor Soccer Championships.
There were 500 athletes on 49 teams in for the tournament, which was played at several venues in Whitehorse, including teams from the communities.
In the U-7 division made up of eight teams, Northerm were victorious with a 6-4 win over the Soccer Shoppe to win the gold medal. Soccer Shoppe earned silver, and bronze was given to the Whitehorse Elks, who won 4-2 to give Intersport fourth place overall.
With 12 teams competing in the U-9 division, Pristine Auto Care came out in first place with a 5-4 win over Dana Naye Ventures. who secured silver. Klondike Business Solutions earned the bronze in an exciting 5-3 overtime win over DHL Express.
The largest number of teams playing was in the U-11 division, with 13 vying for the gold. Impact Well Drilling ultimately earned the medal, winning 2-1 in a shootout over the Property Guys. Physio Plus was third with a 1-0 shutout win to top Austring, Fendrick, Fairman and Parkkari.
In U-13 soccer action, 10 teams were in the running for the gold, with Jacob's Industries winning 4-3 over Sportslife. The Deli took third over Prime Meridian Physiotherapy in a 3-1 battle for the bronze.
Only six teams were out for the U-15 division, but the games were just as exciting as the rest. The Whitehorse Star was victorious over Han Housing from Dawson in a 5-3 win. Locksmith Services sealed a bronze medal after beating Wintemute Electric 3-2.
"The kids played their hearts out,” said Johnny Nunan, president of the Yukon Soccer Association. "Some of them played as many as three or four games in one day.
"We had teams and players participating from various communities; Whitehorse, Mayo, Haines Junction, Dawson, Watson Lake and Atlin, with 12 teams in total coming in from the communities to participate. It was a terrific weekend of soccer,” said Jake Hanson, technical director for Yukon Soccer. "The tournament went extremely well.”
