CARMACKS – The Tantalus School in Carmacks welcomed 12 schools for the 33rd annual Carmacks Ridge Run on Friday afternoon.
This year was the biggest run yet – with 465 students registered, and about 445 taking part in either the three-kilometre or five-km run.
Students of all ages ran through the streets of Carmacks and through local trails, to end at the Tantalus School field.
Lisa Young, one of the organizers of the run and a teacher of Grade 6 and 7 at Tantalus, said this year's run was the fastest yet.
"The first boy that got back was definitely faster,” she said.
The first place runner was non other than Whitehorse's Knute Johnsgaard, who finished in a time of 17:35.
"It was a great day,” Young said. The race was held underneath a bright blue sky and warm temperatures.
One change this year was that each racer had a bib and number, which helped organizers clock each runner at the finish line – and made the race seem like a bigger deal to the kids.
"The kids felt that they were professional racers,” Young said.
The schools involved this year were; St. Elias Community School from Haines Junction, Eliza Van Bibber School from Pelly Crossing, J.V. Clarke School from Mayo, Robert Service School from Dawson, Del Van Gorder School from Faro, Whitehorse Elementary School, Elijah Smith Elementary School, Jack Hulland Elementary School, Takhini Elementary School, École Émilie-Tremblay, Golden Horn Elementary School, Hidden Valley Elementary School, Porter Creek Secondary School, F.H. Collins Secondary School and Vanier Catholic Secondary School.
Young said that the participation of so many schools was key to the race's success.
"Without them we wouldn't have a race,” she said, adding that the help from each school's coach helps make things run smoothly.
"This is the only big event held in Carmacks,” she said.
With Carmacks' big event over for the year, Young said the Tantalus School's running club has a few more exciting events to attend this month.
"Our running club is looking forward to attending the next three races in May,” she said.
The club boasts 42 members from kindergarten up to Grade 12, with most of them taking part in the Ridge Run.
This is Young's second time helping out at the Carmack Ridge Run.
"It's been a great experience so far,” Young said.
