The squash season at the Better Bodies Crosstraining Centre will be jam-packed for the next few months.

The club is in full swing with the sport after a very short break.

League play as well as a number of different tournaments, both at Better Bodies and outside of Whitehorse.

Major upcoming events for this month include the Fit for Heart Tournament.

Better Bodies will host this tournament for the first time from Jan. 18-20.

The two-day event will act as a fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the entry fee of all participants will go towards the non-profit organization.

The Fit For Heart Tournament is one of the main upcoming events right now for Better Bodies all participants must officially enter before Jan. 16.

All levels of players can take part in this tournament.

Other upcoming squash events include the beginning of the junior squash league on Jan. 13, which will feature four teams and five members on each team.

Better Bodies has had previous success hosting the junior league a couple of years ago and will return to a similar format currently used in both the Tuesday and Thursday night leagues.

Participants in the league will be ranked from one to five and only play against other squash players with the same number ranking.

Instead of playing once a week, the junior league will meet twice a month and play on Sunday afternoons.

Teams in both the junior and adult leagues are ranked according to points awarded in individual matches, which are then tallied up at the end of competition. The points from all members on a team are added on to the team's overall total. Players can win a maximum of six points in each individual match.

In December, a kickoff was held where all players between the ages of eight and 17 had the option of signing up to take part in the junior league.

Better Bodies is also looking to send a group of squash players to compete in the Pacific Rim Tournament, held in Victoria.

The club hopes to send as many people as they can and will be holding drill and training sessions in the upcoming weeks.

'The more the merrier,' said Marie Desmarais, the squash pro at Better Bodies. 'If people have never been to a tournament outside and seen that high level of play it is really fun to go to. So we are having programs were people can get fit and train and all that stuff.'

Participants at the tournament have to be members of the club as well as play squash on a regular basis, which includes both lessons and games.

Other upcoming squash events at Bette Bodies include the weight challenge drills beginning on Jan. 7 and the Master Tournament, which will be held from Jan. 18 to Feb. 2.

Both the Tuesday Night Squash League and Thursday Night Squash League will resume this coming week.

Currently MEADIAsolutions has sole possession of first place in the Tuesday league, winning 20 points in their final week of competition.

MEADIAsolutions has 124 points in total and has built up a 20 point lead over second place Pizza Hut.

Sterling Insurance is on top of the Thursday Night League standing by 15 points in total.

The last time Sterling Insurance played on Dec. 13 the team scored 24 points, which is the most that can be won in an evening of competition.
