Athletics Yukon is hosting the annual Grey Mountain Winter Solstice Run/Walk on Saturday to celebrate the shortest day of the year.

The run will start at 10 a.m. up the Grey Mountain Road beyond the rifle range and before the Northwestel Road. Those interested in attending should look out for a pullout where race organizers will be.

The course will be a six-kilometre climb up and six-kilometres back down, with "gorgeous views all around,” said Tanya Astika, for Athletics Yukon.

There is no fee for entry but participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank.

The walk has taken the place of the annual Jingle Bell Walk, and Astika said participants are welcome to bring their Christmas cheer.

"We are also encouraging people to bring bells and jingle all the way up the hill,” Astika said.

Runners and walkers will be treated to hot chocolate and goodies before and after the race.

Athletics Yukon also has a Summer Solstice Fun Run/Walk in the summer to celebrate the longest day of the year.
