The Yukon NDP official Opposition is denouncing the Pasloski government’s decision to prioritize debate on a motion in support of Stephen Harper’s move to send Canadian Armed Forces to Iraq as part of the combat mission against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

Debate on the motion, tabled by Premier Darrell Pasloski, took place on Tuesday, the third day of the session. It took precedence over all other matters other than the tabling of the government’s supplementary estimates.

It appears the government has run out of substantive matters to bring before the Yukon Legislative Assembly.

Yukoners deserve a government that takes action on the concerns of its citizens – not a government that spends its time cheer-leading for Stephen Harper.

The Yukon government has come under fire in recent months for its mishandling of several files.

Earlier this week, Whitehorse city council took the extraordinary step of calling unanimously for Community Services Minister Brad Cathers’ removal from his portfolio.

Yukon First Nations governments have critiqued the government’s support for Bill S-6, unilateral changes to the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act (YESAA) by the federal government that would allow a federal minister to impose binding policy direction on the board that administers YESAA.

And Justice Minister Mike Nixon’s interference in the Yukon Human Rights Commission’s ability to investigate allegations of human rights abuses at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre continues to raise eyebrows.

There are many priorities that, in consultation with Yukoners, we believe require urgent attention.

Instead of debating affordable housing, the closure of Raven Recycling or unilateral federal changes to YESAA, Premier Pasloski instead chose to discuss support for an act of war already taken by the federal government.

So Liz Hanson cheer-leads not stopping actions in the middle east before they get wide spread around the world. War of any kind will be of importance to all Canadians and Yukoners. Any party not realizing the giving of Canadian lives is not important needs to think again. I had family and the Yukon had families that gave their live's for freedom for all Canadians. This sounds like the same belief about the movement in Germany in the 1930's and 40's during the second world war that killed millions of people from over a 100 countries including Canada. The NDP talking the other day about the highways in the COW not being up to standard and people dying just makes me sick. Does anyone accept this type of political actions?
