Jerry Bradford (Sr)

May 2, 1942 – December 19, 2023

Proud Yukoner Jerry Bradford Sr passed away peacefully in his home December 19, 2023, at the age of 81.

Jerry Sr was born May 2, 1942, in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. After graduation he attended Business College in Illinois before serving 2 years in the US Army during the Vietnam war.

He moved north to “God's Country” in the late 1960s where he enjoyed exploring what the Yukon had to offer. In his early days he worked for Arctic Gold and Silver at the Venus Mine in Carcross then the Cassiar Asbestos Corporation in Clinton Creek which led him to his career with White Pass & Yukon Rail. He stayed there until closing and then took his skills to the Yukon College where he worked until his retirement.

Jerry was the happiest in his boat, trolling on the many lakes throughout the territory. Summers were spent with his kids enjoying the outdoors by exploring the campgrounds and lakes in the truck and camper. He enjoyed his coffee outings and many meals with friends, his favourite being Chinese food.

Winters were spent enjoying warmer climates with friends and family. His adventures took him to far off and exotic places from the top of Machu Picchu to Thailand, Mexico, Easter Island and beyond. He always returned with a tan and interesting stories to share.

In the late 1990s he built a cabin on Little Salmon Lake, in the central Yukon, where he enjoyed his retirement. You could always find him either trolling in his boat, teaching his grandsons how to shoot and fish, pulling stumps and burning “junk” wood or playing cards with his good friends.

Jerry was predeceased by his parents and siblings. He leaves behind his son Jerry (Kim) of Whitehorse, Yukon; his daughter Tamara Chalmers (Dean) and his grandsons Reed and Keeton of Airdrie, Alberta.

Jerry lived life on his own terms. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him. As per his request there will be no service.

I knew Jerry at White Pass in the late 70s and at the College for over a decade. He was good to work with. My condolences to his family and friends.

I worked with Jerry at White Pass. In 1976, my friend and I got our pickups stuck north of Haines Junction. I hitched a ride back to Whitehorse. The next day I phoned Jerry and he fired up his pickup and we drove out to ours. He winched both our trucks out and wouldn't accept a thing for it. I always knew him as a great guy.
