DOUGLAS IAN WATSON

January 26, 1927 - October 25, 2021

Douglas Watson passed away peacefully on October 25, 2021, at his home in Edmonton, Alberta. Douglas was predeceased by his parents Matthew and Hazel (nee McLaren) Watson, brothers Bobby, Bill, and sister Scotty Main. He was also predeceased by Janet Mackenzie Watson (nee Ryder), his beloved wife of 61 years and his son Ian. Douglas is survived by his daughter Martha (William King) and son Alick (Anne) and daughter-in-law Janine Pearson; and his six grandchildren, Emily King (David Clanachan), Christopher (Alyssa Schwenk), Maxwell, Fiona (Ross Emerson), Gillian, and Anik, each of whom he adored and celebrated.

Douglas was raised in Carcross, Yukon and never forgot his roots. His pioneering, hard working parents were stalwarts of the community, while operating the Matthew Watson General Store, teaching school and being members of St. Saviour’s Anglican Church. Growing up in the north was foundational for Douglas where he garnered the lessons from his parents.

Douglas continued his education by attending high school at St. George’s School in Vancouver and McGill University in Montreal. He graduated from McGill University with his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1951.

Douglas and Janet were married at St. Cuthbert’s Anglican Church in Toronto on August 26th, 1955. Douglas’ career at BA Oil, J.H. Ryder Machinery and the Manitoba Heart Foundation gave them the opportunity to make homes in Vancouver, Kitimat, Calgary and Winnipeg, while raising their 3 children. Latterly, Douglas and Janet moved to Edmonton, where Martha and her family live.

Douglas’ passions were his family, McGill University, volunteering, education, and exploring.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Douglas’ health care providers who ensured he enjoyed his final years to the fullest. In particular, we thank Dr. J. Butzelaar, Dr. J. Perez-Parada, Dr. C. Perry, Mikhail Surgent, Berni Flett and the staff at Touchmark at Wedgewood Memory Care.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 6th, 2021, at 11:00 am MT at the Anglican Parish of Christ Church (Edmonton) at 12116 102 AV NW, Edmonton.
