David Mary Gerard Walsh

November 1, 1954 - April 28, 2023

David Mary Gerard Walsh was born November 1, 1954, a Marian year, in Toronto, Ontario. He died suddenly of medical complications on Friday, April 28, 2023, at the age of 68.

Dave started his painting career as an interior and exterior decorator at an early age, first in Toronto, then in Calgary, Vancouver, and, for the past 15 years, Whitehorse. Sotheby’s might be slow on the uptake, but certainly not Dave’s patrons. For them, Dave made walls of colour dance with the light. Dave was proud of his painting accomplishments, one being the Yukon government signpost at the entrance of the Erik Nielson International Airport. He also worked at Lil’s Diner on Main Street, making the best ice cream cones and milkshakes and having the cleanest floors.

Dave enjoyed sports throughout his life, especially hockey, football, table tennis, wrestling, canoeing, and cycling. He was an ardent Leafs fan, having witnessed them raise the Stanley Cup in 1967. He was the proud owner of a new, white e-bike and was looking forward to a healthier lifestyle.

Helping neighbours with chores was high on his list, be it moving, house sitting or more painting. Along with his charm and grace, Dave was a great conversationalist, and could put a smile on a face or encourage good humour.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Isabel Conlin and John Francis Walsh, and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his siblings: John (Nancy Campbell), Pat (Eve), Herb (Monique), Shelagh (Peter Walton), Maureen (Curtis McDonnell), Bern, Tom (Fithrie Firdaus Makarao), Christine Gardner (Hank Van Bakel), and Catherine. He is also survived by dozens of cousins and countless nieces and nephews.

Dave appreciated the remarkable care he received from staff at the Whitehorse General Hospital during the last week of his life. He enjoyed their conversations and their hope for him moving forward. Dave, we can see you riding your shiny new e-bike across the bridges of the universe!

In respect to Dave’s wishes, there will not be a funeral; his ashes will be spread at a later date. In lieu of donations, we know Dave would appreciate it if you shared your kind words about him among family and friends in his memory.

Please send your condolences, stories and pictures to John Walsh (friends.of.david.mg.walsh@gmail.com).
