Barbara Hannah (Griffith) Hanulik

October 26, 1930 - December 6, 2022

Barbara was born in the family home in Dolgeville, New York. She graduated from high school, and attended university for two years before entering nursing. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Columbia University. Barbara worked in hospitals in New York, New Hampshire, Fort Lauderdale, and then moved to Sacramento, California, to nurse.

After the Anchorage earthquake in 1964, Barbara and a friend took off in a car full of camping equipment for Alaska. However, they got sidetracked at Whitehorse, where they heard about Dawson City. This intrigued them so they decided to return North the following year where she met Henry Hanulik. They were married in 1967.

Barbara and Henry lived and worked on the Dempster Highway at 41 Mile Maintenance Camp from 1967 to 1971. John was born in 1971, so Barbara and John moved to Dawson City.

Barbara worked at the Information Centre in Dawson City for several years.

After Henry retired, the family spent several summers mining at Dago Hill and Glacier Creek in the Sixty Mile area.

In December, 2016, Barbara moved into Alexander McDonald Lodge in Dawson City, which she referred to as “her palace.”

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Henry, and by her parents, Dayton and Miranda Griffith. She leaves behind her son, John, and brother, Dayton Jr. (Mary). John wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Alexander McDonald Lodge and the doctors at Dawson City Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion.

A special thank you to Brenda Caley who was a designated visitor throughout Covid, to the “Tea Bags” (a group of ladies), and to all who visited Barbara in the lodge.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Richard Martin Chapel in Dawson City on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice.
