The public is invited to join Commissioner Doug Phillips on Tuesday to celebrate exceptional Yukoners at the Commissioner's New Year's Levee.

The popular event will be held in a new location – the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.

"I am pleased to be presenting awards to so many deserving Yukoners, and to feature Youth Showcase artists Shawn Kitchen and Infinite Movement,” Phillips said Thursday afternoon.

"We are lucky to have so many talented and committed individuals in the territory.”

Renée Charlie of Old Crow and Patty Cross of Beaver Creek will receive a Commissioner's Award for Public Volunteer Service.

Charlie is being recognized for more than 40 years as a community leader as well as her extensive volunteer efforts in Old Crow, organizing and directing cultural events and serving on a wide range of boards and committees.

Cross will receive the award for her efforts to save the Beaver Creek community centre.

Her outstanding determination and commitment have turned the centre into a dynamic and positive force within the community.

Raphaël Roy-Jauvin will receive the Commissioner's Award for Bravery in recognition of his selflessness and courage under extreme duress, enabling the quick rescue of his fellow passenger in a helicopter crash.

Eleven students are receiving the Governor General's Academic Award, the most prestigious student award in Canada. It is presented annually to secondary students who graduate with the highest grade point average in their school.

In addition, the commissioner will present 35 Diamond Jubilee medals. The levee will mark the conclusion of Diamond Jubilee celebrations in the territory.

"The Diamond Jubilee celebrations have been very successful and well-received,” Phillips added.

"I am happy to announce that over 150 medals have been awarded to deserving Yukoners over the course of the year.”

The levee will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Long House at the cultural centre on First Avenue.
