Yukoners gave it their best shot

In what turned out to be a near-miss for the finals, Whitehorse's pistol shooters are off the range.
Returning to the targets after coming fourth in team action earlier this week, Danielle Marcott and Kara Lepine placed 10th and 11th in individual competition, just a few positions shy of the finals.
Speaking to the Star following Thursday's shootout, Yukon Shooting coach Ken Speiss said he was proud of his team.
'The girls did awesome. Obviously we were a little bit short of where we wanted them to be, but 10th and 11th in Canada, that's pretty good.'
Male pistol shooters Kai Breithaupt and Ryan Burlingame also did well Thursday, he added, placing 13th and 15th respectively.
Speiss said the likely reason Marcotte and Lepine did not collectively fare as well as they had done earlier in the week was likely due to nerves.
'Definitely it's nerves. When they came in fourth, then they realized their potential.
'Once you realize you can win a medal, it's a different game.'
Speiss said after individual rifle shooting was finished, the team would take a break, then start focusing on national events.
'It looks like we'll do some national matches so these guys can get some more pressure matches.'
Marcotte said she was indeed nervous with a lot of things going through her mind as she shot.
Teammate Lepine said she was also a little anxious but happy she was actually able shoot better today than she did in team competition.
'I'm used to shooting with five people; here it was 21. Here, there's a lot more shooters and there's a lot more noise,' she said.
'Once I shot my first my four, I lost it; I couldn't concentrate after that.'
Lepine said all-in-all she felt her team did pretty well considering the calibre of shooter competing.
According to shooting's sports information officer, Robert Mooney, this year's Canada Games had some of the toughest competitors of any Games.
'There's been some new Canada Winter Games records broken,' he said.
