Yukoners endure another prolonged power failure

The failure of a digital card on the fourth wheel caused a massive electrical blackout Wednesday afternoon, says Yukon Energy spokeswoman Janet Patterson.

The failure of a digital card on the fourth wheel caused a massive electrical blackout Wednesday afternoon, says Yukon Energy spokeswoman Janet Patterson.

She emphasized the latest problem with the power was not with the governor on the fourth wheel which shut down the system in late October for several hours. That failure also caused Yukon Energy to take the largest turbine in the territory off-line for several days.

The card, she explained, provides information to the governor.

Power went off at 3:28 p.m., was back on in some areas like downtown Whitehorse shortly before 4 p.m., and was fully restored across the grid by 4:30.

Staff at the Canada Games Centre had to ask users to leave, and shut down the facility.

With last month's problems with the number four generator, and the number three turbine, Yukon Energy was forced to bring in an expert from Wisconsin to assist with the troubleshooting.

The publicly-owned power corporation was also forced to use diesel generators while the hydro units were off-line. That resulted in the cancellation of the sale of secondary power to the company's 22 commercial customers.

The surplus secondary power is sold at bargain prices, and allows businesses to use the cheaper and electricity for heat rather than burning heating fuel.

Sales of secondary power have been restored.

The Whitehorse General Hospital is a user of secondary power. Administration estimate it was costing an additional $500 to $600 a day to run the hospital without the benefit of secondary power sales.

First of all the article refers to Yukon Energy, not Yukon Electric. The rates we pay now are close to the national average, which is remarkable due to our small population being dispersed over a large area and the fact that there are so few large industrial customers. The only reason rates are as low as they are is because the Yukon government(via Yukon Energy)has been subsidizing their customers for the last ten years, to the detriment of their earnings and infrastructure. Only now are customers being asked to pay the true costs of electrical services in the north. The truth is we don't pay the true cost of many of the services we receive here. This paper published an article on Nov. 3 which stated that the Yukon receives 81% of it's revenue from Ottawa. That's a free ride we all get a piece of. Is there reason for criticism and improvement? Absolutely, but the unconstructive, self-pitying whining solves nothing. At least make the effort to gain a basic understanding of what it is you complain about.

Whining yuppies? Judith, please. I fail to understand what a persons apparent social standing has to do with anything. I'm curious what you consider a 'yuppie' to be. Someone who complains when they pay for a service they don't receive? If so then count me in that category.

I have a label for someone who doesn't complain in that situation: an idiot.

Let me guess...Judith WORKS for Yukon Electric or knows someone who does. Doing the best they can? Please. I find it annoying Judith, that some places I've lived have not had one power outage the ENTIRE time I lived there. I also find your attitude towards the public who pay a lot of money to the electric company regardless of age or income annoying.

I'll bet you were one of the people who yelled at the business owners because you couldn't pay after shopping when the power went out. You might want to turn that all around and walk into Yukon Electric and direct your point of view where it belongs instead of attacking the public when they voice their anger about the situation.

Annoying? In your world its fun to pay more for things you don't get. Go to superstore, fill up a cart, pay, then just leave it there. Ahhhhhhh, the fun never ends. People are getting pissed off at these outages. Why? Increased rates with nothing to show for it. One or two outages are normal, but I have never seen so many latelty up here. This coming from a company which believes innocent people should pay for mines that they have no connection to, FARO. This coming from a company who wants to privatise, and double you bill, again with nothing to show for it. And so on, and so on.

Whining yuppies are annoying ,YE is doing the best they can . A hours time turn around is pretty darn good considering the fact it could be longer.

And they want to increase rates? What a joke. Do us a favor and increase YOUR spending on infrastructure, because its obvious it is in dis-repair.

Yukon Electric acts like restoring the power in an hour is perfectly respectable. They don't account for how long it took our business to get back up and running to full capactity after the power was restored and all the extra work that is involved for the rest of the day.

Good job Yukon Electric YET AGAIN.

lol, yet another power failure. Sooo many excuses and still, we pay a fortune to have power in the territory. I think its time to go natural gas, ie: pipeline to alberta. We are paying huge monthly bills which seem top get bigger and bigger and yet it seems every week or two we lose power for squirrels taking out the grid or a digital card. Maby we just need experienced powermen in the territory. I dinno, its just very frustrating
