At the stroke of midnight, the Yukon government will end its long-running state of emergency (CEMA) directed at the COVID-19 virus as if it’s an unwanted pumpkin at Hallowe’en – as it pushes ahead with its relaxation of rules.
At the stroke of midnight, the Yukon government will end its long-running state of emergency (CEMA) directed at the COVID-19 virus as if it’s an unwanted pumpkin at Hallowe’en – as it pushes ahead with its relaxation of rules.
At the weekly virus briefing this morning, Premier Sandy Silver confirmed the order will end.
Officially, that will happen at 11:59 tonight.
As of tomorrow, there will be no official controls by the government as related to the pandemic – as several provinces announce returns to strict controls.
Perhaps as of much, or more, interest to the general public, Silver and a government staff member say the YG is developing its own version of a vaccine certificate that people can use when they’re travelling.
The certificate will be on top of the cards handed out at vaccination clinics, and will be officially verified.
“The online certificates are in development,” Silver said. “We will have more news shortly.”
Silver said at this time, YG is not currently moving in the same direction as British Columbia, which will also use the cards to permit people entry to sporting events, theatres and other so-called non-essential businesses.
There are no plans to introduce such restrictions in the Yukon, Silver said.
Rather, the Yukon certificates are geared toward travelling, and will fall in line with a request from the federal government to standardize certificates.
Yukoners can also currently request a print version of an immunization certificate from their local health centres, Silver said.
On Tuesday, Clarissa Wall, the assistant director of communications for the Department of Health and Social Services, told the Star that “currently, Yukoners receive a card upon vaccination and can also submit a request for their paper vaccination records through their local health centre.
“Like many other jurisdictions in Canada, we are currently developing an easy and secure way for Yukoners to get official proof of their COVID-19 vaccination online,” Wall said.
“This will have features built in to prevent forgery and allow it to be verified.”
Silver said other jurisdictions are accepting the small appointment cards as verification of vaccination status across Canada at this time.
“It’s an exciting day today,” Silver said, referring to the end of the state of emergency. “It’s an anxious day for some.”
The end of the CEMA order means the end of enforcement for health restrictions, Silver said.
“We’re ending the state of emergency as an emergency management tool,” he said. “But if we have to go back, we will be well-prepared.”
Yukoners will now be responsible for deciding on much of the recommended health measures they wish to follow.
“We will be able to enjoy many of the activities that have been restricted,” added Dr. Catherine Elliott, the acting chief medical officer of health. “But it’s not a licence to abandon all measures.”
COVID-19 activity in the Yukon is continuing to stabilize, Elliott added.
There were two new cases detected Tuesday, and the active case count is 36.
Meanwhile, Elliott said Tuesday that people may have been exposed to COVID-19 infection if they were on the following Air North flight:
• Aug. 21, flight 4N702, Edmonton to Whitehorse, departure at 10:05 a.m., arrival at 1:25 p.m.
“This is a low-risk public notice,” Elliott said in a statement.
“Anyone who was on this flight is asked to self-monitor for 14 days, through September 4.
“If symptoms appear, self-isolate, remain at home and arrange to get tested either by calling 867-393-3083 or booking a test online.”
Rural Yukon residents should contact their community health centre to arrange for testing.
Anyone on this flight who is not fully vaccinated should especially self-monitor for symptoms.
Also on Tuesday, Elliott reported seven confirmed new cases of COVID-19 from noon last Friday through noon Monday.
While there are two confirmed Delta cases in the territory, those involved weren’t infected here.
Public health officials are still expecting Delta to show up anytime, Elliott said, and are prepared for it.
Until Delta gains more of a foothold in the Yukon, it won’t be a focus of public reports, she said.
“Delta is an expected reality,” Silver added. “We must remain vigilant.”
Those reports are starting to dwindle as the situation in the territory remains fairly stable.
Effective immediately, the weekly COVID-19 briefings have been cut back to every two weeks, while the case numbers update are now three times a week.
The numbers will remain available daily on the Yukon government’s website.
A total of eight Yukoners have died from COVID-19 since November 2020. None of the people who have died in the Yukon were fully vaccinated.
“I thank all Yukoners across the territory for your extraordinary efforts and commitment to following public health advice and stopping the spread of COVID-19,” Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn said in a statement.
“We will continue to work with public health officials to monitor the situation closely in the Yukon, and I encourage all of us to continue to follow the advice of our acting chief medical officer of health and get vaccinated.”

I am now 59. With the new herbal medicine for Parkinson I purchased from Multivitamincare. org was my only way to get rid of my PD, the herbal formula effectively reversed my condition and alleviated all my symptoms, people are suffering from this Parkinson disease due to lack of information.

If you don't want to get vaccinated that's fine. Then you should also stay away from the hospital and not plug up those resources for people that are trying to use them and are co-operating with the health system.

I have to say that you are. If the shot allows one to still have and transmit COVID, but MAY decrease the symptoms and those who do not take the shot, may still get and transmit COVID and may end up sicker, than what is it to you if one does or does not get the shot?
In my opinion if the government wants to regulate us and force us to do things which decrease the demand on the health care system and inevitable death, then why not ban alcohol, prescription opiates, junk food, fast food places, you get it. There are far more harmful things in society which put an immense strain on the environment and health care.
I have my vaccine and a copious amount of others due to global travel. However, how many people had their teenager vaccinated against HPV? How many people between 20-35 have taken the vaccine.. it saves lives, decrease the ability to transmit the disease thereby decreasing cancers etc. Older people have the choice to take the shingles vaccine, but taking it could prevent the complications which result from shingles. There is a chicken pox vaccine, no more pox parties, just go get the vaccine; it is better for you anyways.
My point is, if the government feels the need to regulate our rights, then regulate everything. Tired of people who use carcinogens plugging up our hospitals. .. what is that too callous?

A vaccine passport of some kind is inevitable as distrust grows between Us and Them. My concern is how these passports will be developed. I am in support of a paper version that does not depend on a smart phone that costs a few hundred dollars and $100 a month data plan from the telco. Create a wallet sized card for the near term and add the QR code to the driver's licence and similar government issued ID for future applications. Keep it simple and AFFORDABLE for the end user.

If you believe that vaccines should NOT be mandated for ANY workplace or to travel on an airplane, train etc. you should definitely vote for the following:
Jonas Smith in the Federal Election
Yukon Party in the territorial election
Samson Hartland for Mayor
If we end up with any other politician or political party, chances are there will be mandatory vaccines for some work places and/or humiliating PCR tests for unvaccinated folks to travel. So please vote accordingly so we can end this madness and get back to normal!

Unfortunately not everyone’s mind is made up. This will get tested in courts. Thank god, Rights of freedom, pro choice and privacy are not based on majority or else this country would have gone in a terrible different direction in history. Facts about this virus and vaccines are changing daily and yes the flavour of the moment is obvious but, why disrespect those who are cautious? Factually, as previously stated, preventable bad habits cause way more trauma than covid ever will yet you tolerate those behaviours. The contagious rational you use has some merit but seeing as its just as likely you get infected from self proclaimed “ bullet proof “ vaxed who disregard safety protocols, your argument is weak. Respect, freedom and rights are a long term game.

Answer to John on Aug 27, 2021 at 4:13 pm
I don't actually, although accidents can happen to anyone. The difference is that covid is highly contagious and affects other people and entire communities, and can be largely avoided. At this stage of the game, everyone's mind is made up, no use talking about it anymore. The people who decide to not get vaccinated can live with their decision.

The vaccine debate is not that complex. You either believe that the government should have control of what goes into you and your children's bodies or you don't. The rest is sophistry. It is both depressing and disgusting how many petty tyrants there are in our society.

@Dave N, many of us here in the Yukon love our neighbours in Haines as well, and had hoped the border would be open last week - Maybe in late September? That said, I read your post and you said "have a drivers license go to a grocery store and even our national pension, Social Security would be denied to those unvaccinated.". I can't imagine that the Social Security part is accurate - where have you heard that? At any rate, stay safe and well, and hopefully our border will be more fully open soon so that Yukoners and Haines residents can visit back and forth more freely.

what are the exemptions? on Aug 27, 2021 at 12:35 pm
@DWD, what are the valid reasons? At first there were concerns that people taking chemotherapy, or had a recent organ transplant, or any condition where the immune system was repressed, should hold off on vaccinations. But now the findings are that the vaccine is safe for them, as well as pregnant/breastfeeding women, people with Parkinson's, and the list goes on. "I don't want to" isn't a valid medical reason for exemption, nor are the so-called religious exemptions.
Up 42 Down 25
DWD on Aug 27, 2021 at 10:54 am
And what of vaccine EXEMPTION cards? There are many valid reasons for NOT taking the experimental vaccine. All of this coercion, name calling, and pressure to take a vaccine that has reported and known deaths and side effects ought not to be pushed upon folks. It is madness.
Up 26 Down 32
No more on Aug 27, 2021 at 7:29 am
I hope that after the vaccine is available to the younger kids, and 80% or so of them are vaccinated, the clinics close down and those who have chosen to not get vaccinated are on their own. The remaining vaccine doses can go to countries where people are desperately wanting them. I keep seeing stories pop up about 'gofundme' campaigns in the US, where people opposed to the vaccine are desperately ill or have died, and their families are left with medical and funeral bills. To those of you who've made a choice to not get vaccinated, deal with the consequences. It's not as though no one could see this coming

It’s disgusting and further demonstrates your cognitive dissonance. YG is taking the opposite direction than other provinces, which is alarming considering the delta variant and rising case count. Time to mask up again and restrict access to non vaccinated people to protect Yukoners. But hey, keep crying about your perceived loss of civil liberties lol you literally have no idea what you’re taking about.

I don’t think businesses-particularly airlines-will want to eliminate the 20% of their customers who haven’t been vaccinated along with whatever percentage of the fair-minded vaccinated who abhor the discriminatory nature of this. Why not a fit pass? If you choose to stuff your face full of cheeseburgers you cannot go certain places...safety!
Why not a smart pass? To stupid to play scrabble? Stay home and study, your access to much will be highly restricted....safety of course!

As an Alaskan who LOVES Canada I am heartbroken to hear about the vaccine passports being handed down from our governments. This is the slippery slope of tyranny that once we start down there will be no going back. Already here in the US there is legislation on the national level to have vaccination be a requirement not only for travel on a plane, but even to have a drivers license go to a grocery store. and even our national pension, Social Security would be denied to those unvaccinated. In other words, a second class of citizen denied even basic rights.
As much as I would love to come over to your country once more, visit and shop in Whitehorse, camp in those wonderful campgrounds, I fear that those days are over for me now. I am stuck in my 40 miles of hwy to a still shut border as I will never submit to a needle in my arm that has no long term or even genuine short term data on either safety or effectiveness.

Dear BnR, A vaxx card is not about a needle in the arm. A vaxx card should be for personal record keeping of one’s shots. It should not have to be shown to random strangers. I am not asking for your HIV or your STD record either to decide if it is safe to let you sit beside me on the Air North flight. There is something incredibly wrong about a society that requires the participation in a medical experiment in order to keep one’s citizen status. Please inform yourself about the covid shot experiment before calling it just a needle in the arm.
