‘Yukoners are fired up to give Ryan Leef his pink slip’
Melissa Atkinson is calling on Yukoners to consider the best candidate for the job of MP and prime minister when they head to the federal polls in just four days.

Melissa Atkinson is calling on Yukoners to consider the best candidate for the job of MP and prime minister when they head to the federal polls in just four days.
Atkinson hosted a press conference this morning surrounded by a large crew of prominent New Democrats.
They included former Yukon MP and federal leader Audrey McLaughlin, territorial leader Liz Hanson and NDP MLAs.
Atkinson suggested that anyone basing major decisions about their future on a formula should think again about taking that approach.
“Your future is at stake,” she said, standing in front of her supporters. A number were decked out in NDP orange-coloured clothes, with some wearing shirts or fleece jackets, others sporting scarves, while Atkinson wore sneakers bearing the same orange shade of her NDP campaign signs.
Those not donning the colour as part of their clothing ensemble made sure to have campaign buttons visible as they stood with Atkinson.
This morning’s statement came in response to questions from the media about strategic voting.
Last week, the Council of Yukon First Nations recommended its citizens review a strategic voting website which recommends Yukon voters mark their ballots in favour of the
Liberal party if they want a change in government.
This morning, Atkinson urged voters to carefully consider the candidates and vote for who they believe is the best one – who, she argued, are herself for Yukon MP and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair for prime minister.
She backed up her arguments by pointing to proposals outlined in the NDP platform and noting support at both the local level and across the country for the party.
She also mentioned comments from former Tr’ondek Hwech’in chief Eddie Taylor; Stewart Phillip, the B.C. Union of Indian Chiefs’ president; and Don Roberts, the former Yukon Liberal Health and Social Services minister who now speaks for Yukoners Concerned About Oil and Gas Development/Exploration.
“Assembly of First Nations Grand Chief Perry Bellegarde is backing the NDP’s First Nations commitments,” Atkinson said.
“He says, ‘The NDP platform is a comprehensive response to our closing the gap agenda, and that it addresses many of our key priorities and commits to high-level engagement to work together to close the gap.’
“Grand Chief Bellegarde has not singled out any other party’s platform for such praise.”
Atkinson went on to cite the NDP commitments to relationships with First Nations governments.
She pointed first to a cabinet committee that would be struck and chaired by the prime minister that would “ensure that all legislation is in accord with Canada’s agreements with First Nation governments.”
Other priorities would see an NDP government work to close the education gap so aboriginal students receive high-quality education, action on housing, a focus on health care and investments to grow a sustainable economy.
She also cited the NDP’s efforts on Bill S-6, noting the NDP was there for First Nations from Day 1 while the Liberal senators voted for it.
“The past week has been a whirlwind for my campaign and I,” Atkinson said.
“Yukoners are fired up to give Ryan Leef his pink slip, and they’re doing it with an orange ballot.
“On October 19th, I ask Yukoners to stand with Eddie Taylor, with Don Roberts, with Stewart Phillip, and with thousands of our friends and neighbours. On election day, I am asking Yukoners to elect an NDP government that will make positive change in Ottawa.”
She was greeted with loud cheers and applause before, during and after her speech by supporters.

Get out and vote for change.
1. Who signed away our resources through agreements made in China last year & signed the TPP; $ 6 billion to compensate the farmers & auto industry's plant workers & their families who " won't like some of what's in it " ?
2. Halted resource development by gutting water and other environmental legislation ending in court challenges and a tarnished international reputation ?
3. Passed constitutionally challengeable legislation in Bill C-51 aimed at personal freedoms ? ( George Bush ring a bell ?)
4. Etc............ insert your own here.
Weirdness aside ( delusion that he is somehow still in security work & an mma fighter ? ) Ryan got in way over his head and will be gone tomorrow and Paz will be back to filling up prescriptions soon enough.

Ban the troll Yukon on Oct 18, 2015 at 10:13 am
Some of the comments on this article are just plain ignorant.
I will admit I am not voting NDP this time, I have already voted Liberal and am optimistic that it will be a liberal majority for Canada.
Ms. Atkinson is a credible candidate that has bought FN issues to the forefront and I admire her for that. To suggest that is all she is about is ridiculous. To say things like "I want money for school or there are too many handouts is wrong. Those are benefits that the government of Canada has provided to FNs to allow people like "Yukon" to have some sort of tenure in Yukon (which came from a aboriginal name by the way :)

Cyfn!!?? on Oct 17, 2015 at 11:05 pm
Darren? Cyfn is a society, status like a club, they have no fn government authorities period, the First Nation govt authority comes from the Yukon First Nation council tables which fully includes fn council, the individual chiefs are our spokespeople not our dictators! They had no right or citizens approval to endorse. YFN's individually rightfully refused to surrender fn government authority to cyfn when approached.

Melissa should run for Territorial on Oct 17, 2015 at 6:34 pm
Now here's an interesting idea: Melissa should run for the Territorial election if she doesn't get in. I think Larry is going to win, but Melissa is a strong candidate and having gone to high school with her, she is SMART. Melissa, my advice is run for the YT. With you running as NDP, Streiker running as Liberal and Pasloski running for Cons, we would have viable options to get the Cons out, not just federally but territorially as well. Please consider this.

I'm a newly self discovered green, thanks to every online quiz I take. But I've always been a strategic voter. Because I understand that it's a sad but true necessity as long as we have the flawed "1st past the post" electoral system here in Canada. So because I'm a progressive voter I've always voted for the local candidate who's had the best chance of defeating the local CONs. When I lived in Vancouver I voted for Libby Davies for my MP & Jenny Kwan for my MLA...both NDP. Here in the yukon I usually vote liberal for federal or NDP for territorial. I've unfortunately never voted green because they've never had a chance in any of the ridings I've been in.
if I didn't strategically vote & just followed my heart & voted Green here in the Yukon I'm sad to say that it would be just wasting my vote & helping Leef by splitting the vote like happened in 2011 when he "won" the election with just 34% of the vote. 66% of Yukoners didn't vote for him but because of 1st past the post we were stuck with him for the past 4 years!
I don't want that to happen again so I'm voting for Larry, not because I think the Liberals are perfect...because NO party is. But because multiple non partisan websites say that he has the best chance of defeating Leef. and ANYONE is better than Harper!
All 3 opposition parties are pledging electoral reform so hopefully I can vote with my heart for the next election & vote Green!
I would still like to thank Melissa & Frank for running to help make Yukon a better place! Together we can help rebuild the Yukon & Canada & fix the damage that has been done to it over the past 9 years!

NDP will not be getting my vote. I want a leader that will represent the territory as a whole not just based on all first Nations rights and what they don't have. What about my rights, my needs. Where is my funding to be able to go to school. To many handouts if you ask me. If you want votes Mrs Atkinson...stop focusing on your needs and start focusing on the needs of the territory as a whole.

Coordinated media assault make me think I'll be voting conservative. The constant media editorial bias has become too much for me to vote NDP or Liberal this time.

I'm happy you want to help the first nations people but the low income people that are not first nations needs to be noticed too. Some families are going from pay cheque to pay cheque and not able to pay their bills or buy food for their families. I think those people should be noticed and looked at for raising tax income for them. And have more low cost housing for not only first nation people. Sad to see families struggle. And working on getting our communities clean without cocaine in it. So many dealers in our communities and no one stopping them! We need change but can you give it to us?

A vote for the NDP, and not for the Liberals, is a vote to secure another Leef term. Please think beyond self-interest and for the betterment of the Territory ( that Melissa will continue to represent very well despite her defeat on the 19th ).

Actually, this article is a bit biased and favoured towards the NDP, which is too bad. What the author failed to include in this article, is that Melissa Atkinson lost a key endorsement. The Council of Yukon First Nations is endorsing liberal candidate Larry Bagnell. One of the main Yukon NDP party members is also calling on all Yukoners to vote Liberal. Melissa is fighting a losing battle.

Not surprising to see Don Roberts of the anti-everything crowd right in there with the NDP. An endorsement like that may not the best way to get Leef out.

Melissa there are other people than first nations people living in this riding. You certainly don't paint a picture of inclusiveness in your statements.

Ah the desperation from a plummeting political party. Pretending to have local and national support when all of the data points to them being down and out. Kind of sad really.

Because the Yukon wants all First Nations issues at the forefront of our federal discussion. I thought First Nations wanted their own government. Ryan Leef for chief!
