The Yukon Party has sent a letter to the territorial government in support of a number of local restaurant owners who have requested the ability to create or expand outdoor dining areas.
The Yukon Party has sent a letter to the territorial government in support of a number of local restaurant owners who have requested the ability to create or expand outdoor dining areas.
The government, meanwhile, says it also supports the idea.
Recognizing the urgency of the requests, the Yukon Party said Monday, it has offered to work with the government to quickly recall the legislature and pass any legislation required to support these small businesses.
“The effects of the pandemic and the economic downturn in the Yukon have created significant challenges for small business owners in Whitehorse,” the party said in a statement.
“Restaurants have been hit particularly hard, and those that have been allowed to reopen have been faced with new challenges to their recovery, as they are operating under strict guidelines that limit their capacity.”
Representatives of the Dirty Northern and Miner’s Daughter on Main Street and the Wayfarer Oyster House on Sixth Avenue have asked the City of Whitehorse for the OK to use sidewalk or parking lot space on which to place tables.
On June 1, city council expressed support for having city officials investigate ways to provide the extra space.
“While everyone recognizes the importance of these public health measures, capacity limitations will add significant pressures on an already very competitive industry that had limited profit margins in the best of times,” said Stacey Hassard, the Yukon Party MLA for Pelly-Nisutlin.
“In short, a business with half the customers will be less sustainable in the long run.”
Enabling these restaurants to create or expand patio space would allow for more customers while still adhering to physical distancing restrictions.
One of the obstacles for fulfilling these requests are limitations under the Motor Vehicles Act.
“Given this, the Yukon Party supports the immediate reconvening of the legislature so we can quickly pass the amendments while allowing for democratic oversight of any changes to the territory’s laws,” the party said.
Cabinet spokesperson Matthew Cameron said Monday afternoon that Community Services Minister John Streicker discussed the matter with Mayor Dan Curtis last week.
“The Government of Yukon has no concerns about the recently proposed expansion of restaurant patio space in Whitehorse,” Cameron said.
“Minister Streicker identified ways to support restaurants consistent with existing provisions of Yukon’s Motor Vehicles Act and offered to work with the City of Whitehorse to support Whitehorse businesses.
“As always, we are happy to work with the City of Whitehorse.”

Klaus G - are you insinuating that the Yukon Party did not have leadership in that 3.5 years that they were operating with an Interim Leader? Because I think Mr. Hassard did a damn good job for the party. I do not have to "think about what I am saying" - because your comment makes no sense. They were right to wait that long. Imagine they opened it up to a leadership race early on in the mandate and the new leader had to operate as leader without a seat, without a paycheque (assuming they weren't elected) for 3.5 years. What then? Your argument is without logic. They were right to do what they did, and did not lack in leadership.

@SC The 'Yukon Party' took 3 & 1/2 years to elect a party leader. Think about what you're saying.

@moose, you do realize that the legislature was closed before the spring setting was over and the budget had yet been debated. All parties agreed to for go debate and pass the budget as is to make it so the Yukon could function through this pandemic. But much like the federal liberals, they are quite enjoying their running amok without scrutiny. So yes, in fact they do owe Yukoners some legislature time. I don’t think coming back for a few weeks to layout what has transpired is out of the question and would finish off the spring sitting. Offering to hold information meetings with the minister is not a functioning democracy. Getting representation by your elected representative is democracy. Taking an extended summer vacation is not democratic representation. We are in the middle of a pandemic. One would think it should be all hands on deck and a little overtime by elected officials. Scrutiny after the damage is done in the fall seems a little late don’t you think?

@SC You would rather see the Yukon Party conservatives in power right now? Are you nuts? Have a look at how much damage conservative governments are doing around the world. It's no coincidence that the worst places during this pandemic are the USA, Brazil, UK and Italy... all led by rightwing conservatives. Even closer to home, look how much better BC is doing compared to right wing Alberta which is starting to rack up cases again. You are crazy to want a conservative government in power right now. They are the ones trying to immediately open everything up while sacrificing our older folks.

SC? Do you read the comments on this site on a regular basis? Come on, the crotchity cons have been lambasting the Liberals from the day they got into power, and far reaching in their criticism would be kind!! We can't pick and choose which comments are ridiculous, I would say most of the Liberal comments are at least based on some common sense, where as some of the con stuff is just utter rubbish.

The Pasloski Junior Party deserves ALL of the ridicule that it is getting .
It has done nothing but play petty politics since it lost the last election.

I think any time we can give the businesses who have suffered a leg up by something that is no skin off the backs of the government or City, we should do it. If that means allowing them a permit to use a piece of the sidewalk, why the hell not.
Seriously, what does the Dirty paying rent to the Langs have to do with anything Patty Eyre? "The Langs" don't own "the sidewalk". They won't make any more money.
The stupid anti-Yukon Party bulls*&t is so far-reaching these days, people will say anything if they think it means they are taking a public jab at them. But I would rather see them in government right now and going forward.
Help some business make back a bit of their losses, and help people have options for outdoor dining. This is a no-brainer.

@Peter " Using a pandemic to shut down democracy is such a great trick!"
How has democracy been shut down? Please do tell!
1.No elections have been cancelled and these are the essence of democracy.
2.The legislature has been "shut down" every summer for the past 20 years! It is shut down every summer and then opens again for a few months in the fall.....like clockwork....every year. So why all the pearl clutching all of a sudden?
3. The government offered to hold meetings in the legislature where the opposition could have asked a bunch of questions using a similar format as the formal sessions. The Yukon Party conservatives only shot this down because it would take away their reason for over the top drama about "Shutting Down Democracy". Do yourselves a favour and find a real issue already. Cripes.

Open the legislature to pass a bill to assist in making it possible for restaurants to put tables on the street....lol
Talk about big government from the little government folks. More virtue signaling from the loser of the last two elections. This issue is a municipal issue and does not belong in the territorial political theater. Perhaps Stacey can find something more important to do, but I doubt it, it's not like he did anything practical in the last five years.

Cities in Europe have long since had their shopping districts open to pedestrian traffic only. There's open table seating everywhere instead of parking.
This seems like the perfect time for Whitehorse to make the downtown core safer and more appealing to customers.

Com'on Prem. Silver, let's get the Legislature opened again for business or as John Demos say's "take a pay cut like the rest of us". By the way, haven't seen any MLAs in any of the stores during this so called crisis. Who been doing your shopping? And are the Tax payers being billed?

Going out on a limb that the Libs don't think the legislature is all that important. Question period makes their say nothing answers look bad. Plus they don't really like to show up for work. Using a pandemic to shut down democracy is such a great trick!

So the liberals won't bring back the legislature and the elected ministers won't even do interviews anymore? Keep sending out unelected staff to comment. I guess the liberals think they are above answering questions these days. What are we paying them for?

Big Shocker, that building that houses the Northern and Daughter is owned by the Langs, former Yukon conservative MLAs! Of course Hassard and friends would be quick to act.
